Taylor Swift wins 5 Awards at AMAs, Michael Jackson Wins 4 Awards Posthumously

At tonight's AMAs, Michael Jackson won 4 awards including favorite male pop/rock artist, favorite male Soul/R&B artist, and his album "Number Ones" won favorite album in the pop/rock category and the Soul/R&B category. Taylor Swift, however, surpassed Jackson winning 5 awards at the AMAs. Swift, who was not there to receive her awards in person stated via satellite that "Music has never been ultimately about competition. To even be mentioned in a category with Michael Jackson, who we will miss and love forever, is an unimaginable honor." In his lifetime, Jackson has won 23 AMA awards.

While people may hold their judgments about Michael Jackson's personal life, the contributions he made to pop culture are undeniable. To award him posthumously, in my opinion, is a very honorable and respectable move for someone who helped shape and change pop culture. Hopefully his legacy as an entertainer will continue.

i'm not sure how i feel about all the attention mj has gotten after he died. it seems like everyone jumped on his bandwagon when he died, while during his life many people were quite critical.

Well, Georgia, that's the case with pretty much everyone who dies. Not even just famous people. For example, people will comment on how much of an ass Johnny is but once he's six feet under, he was an amazing guy. Plus, it could be that people just didn't realize how much he exactly contributed to the music industry until after he died.

Michael Jackson was truly an amazing artist and he definitely deserves those 4 awards. It's unfair how times Michael Jackson has had to deal with all the horrible rumors and criticism...

and wow Taylor Swift is just amazing! she just never stops impressing people... and always seems to be coming out with such good songs. Taylor Swift, as well, deserves to get a lot of rewards! I think as a celebrity, she's a great influence.

I agree with Phoebe. Many people are very judgmental when celebrities are still alive. But once they pass away, people begin to realize how much they mean to them. This is how it's like with Michael Jackson and his whole thing with plastic surgery and getting a fake nose.

It's nice to know that even after Michael Jackson's death, he will always be recognized for his music. Michael has made a huge impact on the music industry, and will always be remembered.

I'm glad Taylor Swift won five awards at the AMAs because she has hardworking and she deserves it.

I think Taylor Swift probably realized how people might react to her beating out MJ for this honor. Her acceptance was clearly careful not to step on any toes and to still give heavy recognition to MJ, and she handled it very well. I still think its fair that she won however. The award is entertainer of the year, and she has gone on tour etc. which he had not before his death.

I agree with Georgia and Phoebe here. Some people just follow the pop culture trends but some don't realize the artists' true contributions until they are gone. This is kinda like paintings; they are valued more once the artist has passed away. MJ was always amazing and his personal life shrouded his talent for many people who were ignorant of his real skill.
I always liked his music even though as a person I thought he did have some deep seated character flaws. I still feel the same but I am much more sympathetic to him now that he is gone.

I agree with Phoebe, Georgia, and Seth about how everyone seemed to suddenly jump on the MJ bandwagon after his passing. This pattern tends to reappear each time a celebrity passes away. Before everyone seemed to target MJ's relationship with his children and his surgery, instead of focusing on the impact his music has made like this video:

Although this phase has shifted because of his unfortunate death, I truly feel that MJ deserved all the AMA awards he has received. I believe he is one of the most influential pop musicians of the century.

I don't think it's controversial how Swift won 5 awards and topped MJ; she is a great musician deserves them. However, I do agree with Sarah in that she handled the situation well even though she was not at ceremony.

I think it's wrong for them to award Michael Jackson. To be honest, no one gave a (crap) about Michael Jackson when he was alive. Everyone thought he was a child molester. All of a sudden he dies and the world is back to being in love with Michael Jackson. I mean, really now? Oh and Taylor Swift winning was expected. She's becoming a little overrated, but at least she's still a modest person. She /seems/ like a good influence for everyone. Miley Cyrus on the other hand....
