With technology advancing as we get older, there might not be an envelope for us to cut open and tape back together. Report cards are starting to go online. Parents would have an account to check your grades (such as we have Schoolloop), but not just progress reports, FINAL grades too. That means no hiding your report card under your pillow, or saying it got lost in the mail and the school can't print you another one.
Clarksville Montgomery County School District in Tennessee sent out 29,000 online report cards that students did not have to have their parents sign. A growing number of districts will follow this trend...soon there will be no more paper report cards!

I understand that school districts are trying to save money and trees by switching to electronic report cards, however, I wonder what will happen to parents who don't have computer access or are not technologically advanced enough to use the internet? Online report cards might be detrimental by making it easier to hide bad grades for students at risk. Giving the option to receive a paper report card for some students could be a possible solution.
I like the trend, eco friendlier.. However, as many of my friends might agree, letting parents see our grades isn't exactly amongst the list of pleasant experiences. Having my parents see my grades online haven't made life easier.
I couldn't agree with Franklin more. Now that my grades are so easily accessible online, my parents see any dip or jump of my grades with a click of a button. It's stressful, but I guess it's all for the best.
I think it's great that they're saving paper by putting grades online, especially since most of the time grades aren't being shown to the parent. As Dana mentioned, some parents may not have computer access or be technologically advanced enough to check online grades. I know my parents, for example, don't use the computer. So parents that cannot check grades online are placed at a disadvantage. I think the better option is to just keep mailing grades home.
I agree with Alexandra. It seems Eco-Friendly and helpful to the environment to be saving paper. However, some parents either don't have access to a computer or are not technologically advanced enough to use one. This puts them at a disadvantage, even though it would make a lot of students happy. But eventually, parents will have to find alternatives to get access to your grade, whether it comes down to checking with the school or asking you to open up your account. But this can be very inconvenient at times. It is definitely better to mail report cards home.

I understand why people are concerned that parents without internet access/computer skills will be unable to check the reports like other parents. However, there are always public resources, like libraries, where parents can get both internet access and computer help. And while I know the electronic reports do make some parents kind of obsessive, the fact is, they are going to find out our grades sooner or later, so there really isn't much of a point to trying to hide them. Plus, as someone who saves every report card I've ever gotten, it will save a ton of paper. If I just think of multiplying the stack I have by 500 (the # of students at my elementary school), I realize the impact could be huge.
There are some bad things about this as well.. I mean not everyone starts out the year well..and I know for a fact that some parents do really take into account that "oh theres only one assignment-he or she must have forgotten to bring it to school" I guess it could do the opposite.. Parents can go out to motivate their kids.
i hate that grades are now online for parents to see because if you get a bad grade early in the semester,they start nagging at you. What i hate the most about online grades is that it shows the grades for all the papers you turned in. So even if you get a good grade, they get on your case for a zero on your homework that you got three months ago.
Yay for saving trees, but that sucks for people who have "highly involved" parents.
I agree with Franklin. The fact that my mom can go on Schoolloop and check my grades is not a comforting feeling.
Yeah I agree with Dana, parents should be able to have the option to receive report cards in mail or by online. That's probably only one of the major downsides to this idea. Overall I think that this is a good method to save the environment though so yay!

I agree that parents should have the options to either receive their child's report card by mail or online. However, if parents were to receive their child's report card online, isn't that kind of like having access to their child's school loop account?
jeez. I hope aragon does not go paperless. This just makes my horrible grades more accesible to my parents. oh noo
