If you're gonna shoot up, might as well be safe, right?

The Health Department of New York City has just spent $32,000 dollars printing 70,000 fliers that educate on heroin with illustrations and tips. These aren't your typical pamphlets, either. They don't discourage the use of heroin; instead, they teach you how to inject the drug safely. With "helpful" tips such as telling heroin addicts to "try again" if the needle misses the first time and how to find their veins more easily, this waste of taxpayer money brings a question to mind.

Would it have been better to throw the $32,000 into a fire or print these pamphlets? As much as I'll advocate safety when doing anything, I see no point in educating people on how to safely inject poison into their body. These fliers give off the wrong image; while there might be some mention of kicking the habit and seeking help, the central point almost seems to suggest that there's nothing wrong with the habit in the first place.

This has to be my favorite post by anyone so far. I would understand if a private company advocates to "safely" inject heroin, but for a government to sponsor this? Absurd.

It is one thing to advocate for safe sex, but heroin takes it one step further. Advocating safe sex is like advocating safe driving, but advocating safe heroin injection is like advocating safe way to crash your car.

I think advocating something that the government should be restricting is a no-no.

It's New York City, so what did you expect?

If you're surprised, I'm very disappointed in you.

I didn't laugh, smile, or even double-take at the post. It just confirms absolute stupidity.

I agree with Yoda, advocating for safe sex is different than advocating for safe heroin usage. I wish the pamphlet talked about preventing the transmission of diseases, or about getting help from heroine addiction. Although the reality is that people are going to do heroine I wish there was another way to make them save, instead of handing out how-to guides.

Leave it to Jebsen to make an awesome post!!! I love how on the pamphlet it says "take charge, and take care". You would think that "taking charge" would refer to taking control of your life and ending your heroin addiction. Not the case here! Nice one, Jebsen!

I think this post is quite interesting! This post makes me angry that the government is basically instructing people how to do drugs; this is going against what the government stands for. This is like having the government teaching little kids how to light a cigarette..

Only if you could get AIDS from lighting a cigarette the wrong way..

While I understand that the government does things like this because they know that people will do things like this regardless, and that trying to stop it is a lost cause, this flier doesn't give off a good message. It doesn't say a single thing about the dangers, and little kids might get the idea that there is nothing wrong with shooting up.

It almost seems like it is promoting heroin use with phrases like "Take Charge, and Take Care". Those sound like phrases to encourage weight loss, or lowering one's cholesterol; I don't associate "taking charge" or "taking care" with using heroin.

This is really interesting. I find it both strange and productive. If the officals of New York cant control tthe problem the might as well make it safe right? I think that they had a positive outlook on this and not that they were telling people how th use drugs. Its like having health class or school or talking about abstinanse with teens its to help to try and prevend desease or accidents. But over all i think they went alittle off with this one right here good job New York.....not.

The only reason I could see for producing pamphlets like this are if hospitals are getting many patients who abused heroin and messed up . I only say that because soon the government will have to pay for these people who mess up.

Where did you find this??? O__O Definitely one of the best posts, if not most interesting... and disappointing as far as America goes. I mean, really. How to safely shoot up? Shooting up is in and of itself dangerous. There was really no point to wasting all that money on this. =____=

Andrew, New York City or not, the government should not be advocating safe ways to shoot up heroin.

Surprised? I think everyone is more disappointed than surprised.

What we believed to be a government keeping things in order, has changed to a government that follows social culture, which could turn out to big, bad things. Think about it: if people start randomly suiciding next to the Statue of Liberty, is the government really going to make posters advocating "safe ways to suicide?"

I could not believe my eyes while reading this post. I not only find these pamphlets a complete waste of taxpayers' money, but how it encourages heroin use.
Illegal drugs and drug addiction are obviously major problems throughout the U.S., and I think that instead of wasting money telling people how to safely kill themselves, they should have put the money towards recovery/rehabilitation centers for addicts.
Also, I feel like this is condoning illegal drug use and makes it seem like it is something that is accepted throughout society. All I can say is what is this world coming to?
