Chile is on its way up

Since billionaire businessman Sebastian Pinera won Chile's presidential election, it looks like the country has taken a turn for the even better. Pinera has promised to make Chile an even greater country...which won't be that hard seeing that it already has one of the highest GDP in the region, it earned a a combined fiscal surplus between 2005 2008 from copper, and its poverty rate has fallen from 39% to less than 14%. How more perfect could this new job be for Pinera? Oh yeah, and Pinera has money...I mean, serious money.

Pinera has promised to "deliver an annual growth rate of 6% over the next four years, and provide one million new jobs." The only problem: all these promises are riding on copper prices not dropping any time soon. Currently, the price of copper is rising because of increasing demands in Asia.

As for its political scene, it'll be "a balancing act". Pinera is a member of the centrist National Renewal Party, but most of his members of parliament belong to the Independent Democracy Union, a conservative group. Chileans haven't had a very bright view of the right side of politics because of its human rights abuses. Now, there seems to be a change. As for the economy, Pinera has a pretty easy job (as long as copper doesn't drop), but the political forecast is still a little foggy. We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Sounds familiar ... oh wait ... he promised things too ... and ... yeah ... hmm ... it was all to get elected.

Even though Pinera has money, I think it is gong to be his leadership skills that determine if Chile is really going to be successful. Him having money could possibly mean bribes, which could equal corruption and in turn end up hurting Chile.

I agree that he possibly could have just been saying things to get elected, then he would have political power and money...
