Put that phone away

A family was on a recent show on Oprah that lost their daughter to a driver who was carelessly driving and talking on her phone.

This article just emphasizes the consequences of not paying attention on the road. The Forney family lost their oldest daughter of 13 years of age to a careless driver who was using her phone and "didn't see her". The driver was given a fine of 300 dollars, two years probation, and 150 hours of community service, which i dont see as enough as compensation for a daughter.

This happened in Colorado where phones are still legally allowed while driving and this Oprah show just emphasizes the need to change the law in the remaining states.

So just text that special someone when you are done with that five minute drive instead of during. It is a law in our state for a reason!

I agree Tim. I'm pretty sure most texts could wait a few extra minutes before being sent while driving. If not, pull over to the side of the road. I don't think any student or adult is that great of a driver that they can text while driving. When you aren't fully paying attention to driving, your risking not only your life, but other drivers' lives.

It's funny...even though California passed the law on no using a phone while driving I still see people who think they're above the law.
I'm not very good at texting but if i were driving and texting at the same time the result will probably be like this.

haa to answer jack no i do not but i should start up she has some good messages hahah jk i just read the article
but for real everybody i see texting has to be so focused on typing their message out before doing anything else
driving at the same time just is rediculous

I think that people shouldnt be able to this in america but people have different rules for everything now a days. I've been driving and a woman almost hit me with her car while merging because ahe was talking on her cell phone with one hand on the stearing wheel. Then she looked at me like it was my fault and the one in the wrong. I wish that people respected the life of peple around them.

I agree with everyone here. I'm pretty sure that not texting back that special someone right away won't kill you. Using your phone on the road not only puts your life at risk, but those around you. Many innocent lives are taken away as a result of people's decision to ignore laws that are meant to protect you.

Losing a daughter seems compensation enough for her carelessness... I just hope she learns.

o lily sorry for the lack of clarity

another woman hit the daughter of the Forney family on Oprah. It was not the family that hit their own daughter.

Read the first sentence ... and ... you know the rest.

Common sense isn't worth mentioning.

i agreee! i think that it is necessary for a national law to ban the usage of phones when driving. People seem to be multitasking when they are driving such as doing their makeup, texting, eating.... It is worth banning the usage of cell phones when one is driving in order to prevent many more careless accidents.

Doing their make-up while driving!?! Some people out there don't care about what they'll look like...haha.
On a more serious note, I was driving down El Camino one time with my friend Gina and a young man, about our age, in the black Honda right next to us was lighting up a PIPE. Yes, a pipe. While driving. With no hands.
That's a death wish.

I think it's extremely necessary for other states to change their laws because texting or doing other things is dangerous for not only the driver but for pedestrians. I'm glad that we have laws in California that force you to pay a fine if you talk on the phone while driving.

The driver should've been sentenced to jail for killing the little girl. The punishment isn't enough for him or her to learn his or her lesson.
