State Capitol Awash In Blue For Diabetes Day

If only i had read this earlier in the day i would have woren blue today. According to the American Diabetes Assoication(ADA) fact sheet of 2007, 23.6 million people in America have Diabetes. Of those 23.6 million people, 186,300 people under the age of 20 have Diabetes and about 2 million in that age group have pre-diabetes, which means you "have blood glucose levels than normal, but not even to be diagonsed." I think it is a good idea for people to start education younger kids on staying healthy. Which means excersing regularly and keeping a balanced diet. Both types of diabetes run in my family, so because it is in blood, I have to watch out more, as well as other people like me. But even if it isn't "in your DNA", you still should watch out for your self and make you and others around you are leading a healthy life.

Sad statistics. Unfortunately, America's obesity problems and statistics do not help diabetes statistics. However, a lot of people tend to throw aside the idea that many of those diagnosed with diabetes are not necessarily obese. Like Andrea says, it tends to run "in [people's] DNA" in many cases. Nevertheless, I think adolescents really need to focus on staying fit. That means getting active by participating in sports, walking or cycling to school instead of driving (if at all possible), and even running in P.E. when you are supposed to...instead of using those "walk days" to make up points. I wonder if P.E. really does all that much help though. I would be interested to see a study that deals with a correlation between diabetes in adolescents and diabetes in adolescents who participate in P.E. regularly.

Like Conor said, there are a lot of sad statistics mentioned in this post. But I definitely agree with Andrea; the best way to prevent diabetes is to eat healthy and to start doing so at a young age. It is especially important for children to eat healthy since they are more susceptible to diseases and they are affected at a greater level when they are sick. Also, it's important to keep in mind that just because you are healthy now, doesn't mean that it will always be that way. I hope that no one takes their health for granted and that they take advantage of their time to exercise and to make good decisions when regarding what to eat.
