College Quidditch!

Yes, you read right: according to the linked article, Quidditch (the famous sport of the wizarding world played on broomsticks, from Harry Potter) is now played in colleges, and the sport has "grown to include more than 400 collegiate teams at schools that include Harvard, Yale, USC and universities from Peru to Perth. More than 300 high schools participate, too." If you want more details about how we Muggles (non-magic people) manage to play Quidditch, you can read the article. I think this is very cool as I have been an ardent fan of Harry Potter since elementary school, and I never thought it would actually be possible for us to play the game, but it's happening, and it is apparently the "hottest sport to hit college campuses in years."

This is awesome!! Aragon should get a quidditch team too! It's too bad that we can't fly like the real quidditch game in Harry Potter. However, I bet that with our technological advances one day kids will be able to fly while playing this game. I'm going to be jealous of those kids.

I heard about this too! I'm psyched to see these games. The timing is perfect as well, seeing as how the seventh Harry Potter movie is coming out soon! I agree with Erica, I don't doubt that one day, we will actually be able to have flying broomsticks. According to an blog post from a couple days ago, we already have flying cars!

Haha. Yeah when I was college visiting last summer I heard mention of several schools having Quidditch teams. At the time, not sure how that worked...

I was actually just talking about this with someone today! I think it's totally clever, especially that a person is the snitch. Although who knows - maybe someone will invent a real flying snitch sometime soon. I wouldn't doubt it.

Now, this is just my opinion... but this "sport" seems kind of dumb.

I read this same article the other night! I think it's so funny that Harry Potter fans are trying to bring the game to life. It's definitely great to see College kids having fun. I would love to go to a school with a Quidditch team.

Quidditch!!!! I guess colleges can have some more fun by including the sport in the athletic programs. I mean, what's gonna stop them from playing a fake sport? I'm sure there's plenty of people who'd want to join and learn all about a sport from Harry Potter.

I've heard of this before. While Quidditch may be fun for some people, I really don't think it would work very well as a competitive sport. The rules system laid out in the books was really unbalanced, with the Snitch rendering everything else meaningless. How are they going to ensure the objectivity of the players being the balls? And running around with broomsticks between your legs? Rather silly. I'm going to have to echo Bobby John's opinion, that this "sport" seems kind of dumb. But hey, if it's safe and people enjoy it, that's all that matters, wot?

I would like to respond to Jack's comment. First I would like to point out that the snitch, while ending the game, also gives the team that possesses it 150 points. This does not grant automatic victory to the to the team with possession; in fact, there have been many examples where the game was NOT won by the team that caught the snitch. For example in book four, The Goblet of Fire, Victor Krum caught the snitch for the Bulgarian, but the team was trailing by 160 points, ending the game and losing the victory for the Bulgarian team.

The game itself seems very simple as it is a combination of dodgeball, basketball, and soccer.

Finally I will address the broomsticks. How else do you expect us to play? Running around like wild animals throwing balls at each other? Very uncivilized. also the game is honoring those apart of the wizarding world. I feel it necessary at the very least to honor their traditions.

I believe Quidditch is a fine sport and deserves the attention that it has recently gained. In fact, i think its time for it to become the next great American Sport.

As a fan of the Harry Potter series, I always loved seeing the characters take part in Quidditch matches. I always had a fantasy about playing, but I guess it's now a reality. How fitting you mention this, as Harry Potter comes out this week.
Last, I think Quidditch deserves some respect. It is a perfectly fine sport.

@Aaron: Yes, it is possible that the team that catches the Snitch does not win the game. But what are the chances of that happening in real life? You'd have to be more than 15 goals behind when the game ends. How often does that happen in professional sports?
While this certainly will be a fun pastime, I don't see it becoming a professional sport.

@Bobby: Don't knock it 'til you've tried it. I find it really exciting that this game, sport, or whatever you want to call it has a place for both the athlete and the literature lover.

Emerson College has an official Quidditch team and they take a lot of pride in it, as they should. A team from either Norway or Normandy (I cannot remember) sent their team to Boston to play Emerson's team. (Emerson won).
I would definitely join the Quidditch team if I could. When I had the first two Harry Potter games on CD-roms (..from when I was 10 or so), Quidditch would be the one thing that I particularly liked to play.

Man, I really wish I was good at sports. If I played this game, I would probably be thrown to the ground by a Bludger, no hand to eye coordination.

This totally reminds me of my favorite Harry Potter spoof. Enter: Ghetto Hogwarts. Ever wonder what it would be like to go to an inner city school for magic. Its NO Hogwarts, that's for sure.

I love how we've turned a fantasy sport into a sport that college kids are all getting involved in and having fun with. Pretty soon we're going to be seeing Quidditch teams in high school, too! Yayy.
