Car-struck deer flies through windshield, out back

Was reading this and just thought to myslef, how fast was this car going to have hit a deer and have it going flying through the car, hitting the kids in the back and giving them injuries and then to fly out the back of the window? I think that is just crazy. The car must have been going pretty fast, don't you guys think? And in Minnesota, on saturday when the accident happened, it was the first day of the deer hunting season...how ironic and horribly sad.

I think this is a sign of reckless driving that most people tend to do alot. it is a sign that drivers need to be more cautious and aware of their surroundings and enviorment!

It also shows the lack of quality in whatever make of this car that was in the accident. I wonder if it says which kind of car it was in the article? I know I definitely don't want to be driving that car around, at least in deer country.

I agree with the both of you, drivers do need to be A LOT more careful when driving. And Danielle, in the article it didn't say what make the car was, but its still unbelievable.

Wow, this would be extremely frightening to actually experience. This kind of hits home for me, because it just shows me that I must be more carful when driving to school in the morning because a few times I have almost caught the deer in headlights.

Talk about traumatic...

Wow, this is pretty bad, and Vernon is right; this was most likely caused by poor driving. What I'm more concerned about is the condition of the family right now given the injuries. By the way, the car that initially hit the deer was a Ford Taurus(MSNBC news video on the same subject). Also we need to take into consideration that it was on a highway, so they were probably going at least 60 miles an hour in the other direction. I'm not sure you guys would beleive this, but the Mythbusters proved that just a slushee drink thrown out of a 60 mph car in the opposite direction of another sixty mph car, the drink will shatter the wind shield and push it back out of its hinges. Now given that the deer's mass was much greater it would make sense that it went through both wind shields. What I'd like to know is if the cars were turning a corner or some sort of curve that might've impaired any vision because at freeway speeds, your reaction time is even more limited. Emily also makes a good point, and I know that I'm definetally going to be paying much more attention at night now when I'm driving.

I would have to agree with Michael. Because many American roadways are built through areas populated by game, there is the inherent danger of the animals drifting onto the road. Bad driving wouldn't necessarily have anything to do with this story. Using a personal example, I was in a car going near 65mph on highway 280 towards Woodside when we hit a deer, thus inflicting over $3000 in damage to the car. The deer lived, for those who might be somewhat concerned.

I can just imagine how fast the car was going in order for something so terrible like this to have happened. I hope the kids get well soon and recover from their injuries. I also hope the driver does not drive this way anymore. We need more careful and safe drivers on the road, not crazy people, driving like maniacs, thinking they're the owners of the road and they're allowed to do whatever the heck they want.

People are just usually focused on driving and won't pay attention to most stuff around them. However, if a deer all of a sudden appears in front of a car, the driver's instinct usually will try to swerve and avoid hitting the animal. In THIS case, this driver must have either been crazy or stupid to be going that fast on the road and not reacting to the deer in front of him or her.

Haha, I didn't even know something like this could be possible, let alone the Slushee thing. I agree with Vernon that yeah this is definitely an act of reckless driving...but you know, the deer was probably at fault too in a way haha. Maybe the driver just had really slow reflexes and...kept driving when he saw the deer, IDK! I feel bad for the kids though, I would have been traumatized for life.
