New York and same-sex marriage

A bill is being introduced into the New York State Senate this week that will bring up the issue of same-sex marriage. This has been an issue for awhile in the state of New York and if this bill passes the State of New York will become the 6th state to allow same-sex marriage. If the bill doesn't pass though it will become the 32nd state to disallow same-sex marriage. Right now the signs as pointing towards a thumps-up for same-sex marriage. With all issues of this kind, there are of course protesters. These protesters however are scarce and are mainly religiously oriented people. The politicians however don't seemed to be swayed by the protesters.
Personally I believe same-sex marriages should be allowed because I have always thought that people come to the US to avoid these kinds of discriminations.

I definitely agree with your last statement, and it is really time for the US to wake up and be more of an accepting country. I hope that the bill passes because if it doesn't, then that means we will have 32 states in our country that are against equal rights.

Well.. it didn't pass. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/03/nyregion/03marriage.html?hp

Unfortunately, instead of becoming the sixth state to allow same sex marriage, it is the latest state to deny it. I wasn't surprised that the bill didn't get passed though. The Democrats (who introduced the bill) only have a one seat majority, and naturally need a few of their republican counterparts to vote for their bill. Not a single republican senator voted for same sex marriage, as suspected. Additionally, some of the Democrats were even hesitant about passing the bill and ultimately voted against it. Not only did the democrats need support from the opposing party, but they also needed party unity.
Maybe the bill will be reintroduced later.

I am all for gay rights.. but passing legislation for equal rights has always been difficult.

I completely agree that everyone should have the opportunity to marry his or her loved ones. Hopefully if New York accepts same-sex marriages, it will influence other states to do the same. They have the ability to set a great example.

Personally, I don't see why this is such a hard bill to pass; equality shouldn't be something controversial. Hopefully there will be other states to join the smaller line of 6.

I also agree that this bill should have been passed...it's very unfortunate that it wasn't. I think that same sex marriage should be part of our freedom of choice - the freedom to choose who we marry, but unfortunately not everyone agrees with us.
