Second Gay Biship

Yesterday, the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles elected a lesbian to be assistant bishop. This woman is the second openly homosexual in the global Anglican fellowship; the first gay bishop elected was V. Gene Robinson of New Hampshire (elected in 2003). When the first gay bishop was elected, there was a huge uproar and there was a break among the church: breakaway Episcopal conservatives formed a rival church called the Anglican Church of America. The vote on Saturday is likely to cause even more damage among Episcopalians, Anglicans, and other Christians. I find the breakaway to be a natural thing because if one part of a group ardently objects to something, they are likely to break apart. I find it similar to the secession of the South when they wanted to keep their southern institution of slavery so badly. I'm not calling it an exact comparison, but the cases are similar in that one group disapproved of the other and separated from it. I don't see the separation as a tragic thing because it only makes sense that the others would separate if they don't approve. However, I do think they should be more accepting. It's a wonderful thing that homosexual bishops are being elected- it just shows how accepting people can be.
