Jail Attack frees "high risk" inmates in Philippines

Hurray, my first post. In Isabela City, Philippines, 70 heavily armed men broke into a jail, and freed 31 of its inmates. All of these inmates were being detained for being violent "Muslim guerrillas". Of these inmates, many were members of the Abu Sayyaf terrorist organization, a rather violent group with links to al-Qaida. Two of the escaped inmates were accused of beheading 10 marines in 2007.

But hey, I'm sure this was totally unexpected and a once-in-a-blue-moon kind of a thing. Right? Wrong! 3 Abu Sayyaf inmates also accused of beheading those 10 marines escaped in December of last year after overpowering their guards. At least 16 people, including 4 Abu Sayyaf members, escaped in 2007. And in the biggest jail break, 53 violent inmates escaped in 2004 after overpowering their guards using 100 machine guns! No. 50 machine guns!! No.
Try a smuggled pistol!!!

Maybe it's just my opinion, but if you are going to put a whole ton of mentally-deranged terrorists in one prison, at least make sure they can't overpower their guards with a pistol.
What do you folks think?

I am so sorry. I totally failed at putting a link in the title.

That is really disturbing and scary. I definitely think that more secure prisons need to be in place, but I don't see what can actually be done. It's not exactly our country or very high on the US priority list.

obviously if inmates can escape with a single pistol the prison isnt well guarded. this prison needs to reconsider their guard system. go to this link for a discussion on prison security.http://www.ifpo.org/articlebank/components_prison_security.html

Out of this whole situation, hopefully the prison system in the Philippines will improve. Being accused for killing 10 marines is a serious offense. With that said, the prison should have been more secure.

I really hope this isn't the prison where the inmates do Michael Jackson dances.

It seems to me like if this has happened before something should have been done about it then. I don't know what exactly they think of the situation there, but it seems like an important issue if dangerous men are able to release even more dangerous men from prison so easily. Maybe increasing security or not having as many inmates in one place might help avoid these escapes? I'm not sure what they need to do, but its clear they need to do something.

I definitely agree with lizzy. The guards and the whole prison system needs to be looked at closely, because if someone with a pistol can over power guards, I don't even want to think about what would happen if these individuals got a hold of real weapons.
