No School? Sweet!

As states are trying to recover from the recession in the economy, many states have imposed furloughs for state employees such as DMV workers and other public officials. By having these furloughs, states are able to save on spending in order to try and save themselves from rising debts.

While closing the DMV several times a year may be an inconvenience to people trying to register their cars or renew licenses, imposing a furlough on a school disrupts learning. That is what Hawaii has been doing. They are cutting 17 days out of their school year and have laid off several teachers. While students may celebrate because they get more three day weekends, their grades may suffer.

I agree that cutting out school days disrupts learning and that the grade's of students may suffer because of it. As much as I would enjoy having fewer days of school, it is pretty clear that a lack of school days will most likely lead to falling grades. Since we are the "future of america" and we need to be well educated, i do not think cutting the number of school days would be a wise choice...

I agree with sabrina. As much as most students would enjoy fewer days of school, it is definitely not a good idea because if the days of school gets cut down, this may very well jeopardize students' grades. Fewer days of school is also harmful to students who learn at a slower pace.

I agree. By cutting 3 school days a week may seem like a very good idea for students, it may not be such a good idea in the long run. Students' grades will drop significantly compared to other students from other schools from the lack of school days. By cutting back school days, and laying off teachers, schools may suffer and be unable to keep up with standards. By doing this, America isn't really saving anything. It is more likely to hurt the future generations of America, rather than shield it from anything.

I agree with all of you. It is not a good thing that they are cutting back days of school. Education is very important these days as it helps people get jobs, learn, make good decisions. Better educated people are known to vote more as well. We need more educated people so that when they become big and strong, they will be smart leaders for the US.

WHile furloughs is a way to save themselves from debts, there has to be some other way. They should find other ways to help recover from the recession.

I agree with Sabrina. There's nothing I'd love more than days off during the school year. Unfortunately, we're still young and in the process of jump starting our future. A few days off of school that affects our learning isn't worth it. States should find better ways to cut costs instead of firing teachers and cutting school days. I guess money always comes first for everything. Even a child's education.
