And the U.S is out to try and win again!

Earlier today the UnitedStates made it offical declaring that they HAVE to win the war in Afghanistan. Senator Mccain discussed several different reasons why the US must and if you are interested go ahead and take a look on the cnn website. As I read through his articles I came about and found one of the most interesting articles I have heard about all week. Obama has payes 680 billion dollars to have the afghans switch sides and help the United States. That is a ton of money! What is he thinking. I mean I understand if we wanna win we have to do anything possible to win but this is crazy! To win is not about bribing and since this is one of the longest wars in the united states we need to make a effort to make it a fair game. This is going to take more violent risks and why should we chose to do that? The united states has so much going on for it self right now and so much to accomplish why waste the time now to come up with unfair tactics. In my opinion I believe this is going a little over the top...any other opinions?

I somewhat agree with you, but from what I understand about the Afghanistan war, we need to get support any way we can. I do not endorse bribery, but in such a corrupted nation, sometimes money is the answer. Especially with many people having poor living conditions, they will support us if we give them money. Then we will have a better chance at winning the war and restoring a government more suitable to govern Afghanistan.

I agree with Derek. Although bribery isn't the best option to get your way, most people will do almost anything for money these days. I think that the US should do everything they can possibly they can in order to win this fight. Even if it means stooping down to bribery.

I agree with Sabina. I think that bribing Afghanistan is a completely unethical action, and it should not happen. Yes, the war in Afghanistan is devastating and tragic, but I am sure there are other alternatives besides just money. Bribing Afghanistan immediately puts the U.S. in negative light across the world, as everyone can see that the U.S. is willing to commit such immoral actions. The U.S. can potentially lose its credibility and find it difficult to create new foreign relationships. It can possibly create numerous lasting problems into the future, compared to the War in Afghanistan.

Yes, although this seems like bribing, perhaps funneling money into a money starved country will cause some benefits. If you were in McGlashan's class last year, you will remember the very poor conditions in Afghanistan today. Even today, it's wealthiest cities look dirty and not modernized. Perhaps all they need is some money to rebuild their country (it was once somewhat prosperous before Russia's invasion).

While I agree that money could be the answer since it is such a poor country, my question is where is the money coming from? The United States is already in trillions of dollars in debt, how can we afford the bride Afghanistan with such a huge sum of money? Does that mean taxes will increase in order to pay for it?

I agree with Derek and Alexandra; sometimes one must choose between the lesser of two evils. Sure, bribery and corruption are both unethical to an extent, but what is the best way to end the war and save the most lives with the least destruction possible? I'm sure that President Obama gave this a lot of thought before deciding anything, and I stand behind him in his decision to choose the lesser of two evils.

I agree with Talia that the money to fuel this appeasement makes it unfeasible. Not only is our country in dire need of money, but this encourages third world countries and North Korea to step up their aggression.

All they have to do is be aggressive and hope that we will purchase peace with them.

I agree. Bribery may be the least favorite choice, but we should still give it a shot. I know it's not something Americans would want to do. But we need to avoid risks and do what's best. Bribery may have benefits for both sides. But why not try something that will make us both happy? Like Derek said, if we use money as the answer, we can help ourselves and at the same time, make Afghanistan happy.
