Why no contract?

Rafael Furcal in 2008 was on the verge of leaving the Los Angeles Dogers to the Atlanta Braves. At the last minute the Dogers came and swooped up the shortstop. This made the Braves president John Schuerholz steaming mad, calling the deal "despicable” and “disgusting” What made the Dogers deal so much better than the Braves? A firetruck. According to the deal, a firetruck was given to Furcal's home town in the Dominican Republic. According to Furcal his old town only had a fire department had a pickup truck to put out fires. But now with a fire truck, “I’ll sleep better knowing people will be safe. I’m the only guy who made it. It’s like a responsibility to me”, says Furcal. I think it's a good thing Furcal is doing. I hope all superstars will follow his example.

I think it's admirable that there are famous people like him that are still down-to-earth and focus on issues that aren't well known. If everyone who was famous followed Furcal's example it would certainly help solve issues that are plaguing society.

Furcal is truly meant to be admired and his actions are quite inspirational. Nonetheless, the underlying premise of the argument of the Braves was that the Dodgers employed an underhanded emotional game to coax Furcal back into their lineup. Do the Dodgers have any interest in sending firetrucks to Latin America? No. Is it morally justified to play on an athlete's patriotism and emotions to sign a favorable business deal? No. Do morals really matter in business as long as said business is legal? One would hope so; however, it seems as if this is not the case more often than not. Thus, was the move made by the Dodgers consistent with their rights as a free enterprise? Yes, and it was quite an innovative move at that.

Regardless, with the number of amazing prospects in the Braves' farm system, they have no reason to complain!
