Eruption of Mount Shinmoedake

Eruption of Mount Shinmoedake

Mount Shinmoedake, a volcano in Kyushu, Japan, has begun erupting again for the first time in 52 years. It is feared that the volcanic activity from Mount Shinmoedake will increase further. It is located in a pretty densely populated area, and if it erupts again, many people will be in danger. Fortunately, no serious injuries have yet been reported, though there has been property damage.

The government has barred off a two-and-a-half mile radius around the volcano, and more than 1,000 residents in high-risk areas have been asked to evacuate. However, only about 600 have done so, and some are choosing to stay and take their chances with the volcano.

Volcanic eruptions are a common danger in Japan, and can cause significant damage and disruption. In 1991, 43 people died in the eruption of Mount Unzen.

My prayers go out to the people who may be in danger from the volcano. I hope everyone will be all right. At the same time, I marvel at this awesome demonstration of the power of nature. Someone managed to catch the eruption on film. Check it out!
