Bangladesh Girl Lashed to Death

Hena Begum, a fourteen year-old female, was publicly lashed to death after being accused of having an affair with a her cousin, a married man. In the village where Hena Begum lived, the court of elders ruled that she would be lashed to death; this punishment was under an Islamic Sharia law. Not only did Hena Begum get lashed to death, but her father also had to pay a fine of about $700 as a result of his daughter's sentence.

Even before the
village court passed the sentence and punished Hena Begum, the family members of the married man beat her up. She was sent to a hospital after receiving the lashing and passed away six days later. So far, the cause of Hena Begum's death is still under investigation.

Hena Begum's father expressed his disappointment in the court and the law, saying, "
What sort of justice is this? My daughter has been beaten to death in the name of justice. If it had been a proper court then my daughter would not have died." Today, Hena Begum's father as well as many others rallied in protest of Hena Begum's unjust death, asking for real justice to be done. So far, four people have been arrested and charged for taking part in Hena Begum's cruel death.

It's sad to read that such violent laws, such as allowing someone to be beaten to death for supposedly having an affair, still exist in other parts of the world today.

This cruel beating and poor show of justice is sicking and depicts a place like Bangladesh as a horrible, gorilla like community. There is no justice what so ever in this. No person should receive a punishment like this for something so petty. Even if the act she committed may have gone against the religion, i find a lashing to death an inhumane way to punish a girl. I hope Bangladesh looks back on this and lives with guilt in their hearts for this cruel punishment.

I guess we shouldn't be so quick to harshly criticize our judicial system...it may be tedious, but at least it's usually fair.

When will justice be pursued everywhere? Is it possible, or are some countries just unfit for sound judicial systems?

I can't believe this poor girl was lashed to death because she apparently had an affair with her cousin. I think this is a cruel act of violence and it makes me sick to know that there are countries where they put such laws in effect, laws that allow the government to kill someone because of something that they did or might not have done at all, but are just accused of. I don't think this poor girl deserved to die in such a horrible way. If they believed that she was having an affair with her cousin, then they should have investigated and found out for sure, but not beat her to death. This really upsets me and I hope that justice is brought to this girl's family as well as those who have been affected in the same way.

I'm surpised but not shocked with how this has played out. Often times, as we may know, women in some countries get stoned or beaten to death if they cheat on their husbands or anything along those lines. It's absolutely disgusting that people would lash a 14 year old girl on the basis that she may have had an affair. I read some articles and none of them say whether she had the affair or not, but no one deserves to be lashed to death. Furthermore, no justice was served in this case. Unfortunately, I don't think laws like these will be changing anytime soon. I hope that her family does get some sort of justice, but I'm not too sure of the likelihood.

This situation is terrible on multiple accounts. Did the "justice" system ever find out any concrete proof? And in any case, do those people realize that it takes two to have an affair? Was the married cousin punished at all? If Hena was given such an excessive and extreme punishment, it seems ridiculous to me that the villagers could expect the married man to be free from guilt.
