Skills for America's Future

Earlier today Obama announced his, Skills for America's Future program, in which he links top companies like Gap, McDonald's, and etc. with community colleges in hope of building up America's job skills. He desires to make it easier for people to get a job and find workers for those companies looking to hire. This is one of his key recommendations for his Economic Recovery Advisory Board. The question is though, what about all the other unemployed people that really need these jobs?

Many students in the community colleges will find this beneficial because they will be able to learn the curricula for that job and also they have the job some to them instead of them having to go to the job. Many big business really like this idea as well because the workers will be more prepared for the job because they are learning it in school.

TThe Suffolk County Community College has been doing this program for awhile already and have found it very good idea. The community college has been placing students successfully in jobs and filling gaps in training and skills for local and state business. Many other community colleges have found this idea to sound very good and are very excited to adopt this idea. They community colleges can't wait to begin this and the possibilities to expand partnerships in creating new job opportunities between private-secto employers and community college.

I don't know about other students, but if i was going to community college i would find this a very beneficial thing to my education because not only do i get experience in working at that business i even get to learn more about the business in school. Now a days, when students graduate college they go out into the real world looking for jobs that they acquired skills in.However, with our recent recession, it makes it harder for people and those students to find jobs. But with the new program students won't have to worry about finding a job because they will have been able to acquire one in college. Although students may still want to go out and get a job, they have one right in front of them that hey have been able to practice at and learn about.

If you were in community college would you find this new program proposed by Obama helpful to you?

I think it is mildly ironic that the companies allied with Obama's Skills for America's Future program are McDonald's and Gap. Don't the majority of these companies provide low-level training jobs where their employee's don't need to have gone to college?

I do think its important to make sure that students are being trained for what they will have to do in their future occupations, but I also hope this program doesn't have an adverse effect. If students are focusing solely on what their future job requirements state, they may possibly lose a sense of a well-rounded, enriched education that college typically aims to offer and instead settle for a specialized set of narrowed job skills.

Danielle has a point. It would be less beneficial to have the focus of your education be only on your job requirements. Especially in our economy where people are constantly looking for a new line of work to support themselves financially. Although this idea would help the scholars find jobs easier and thus help the economy, the long run effects are crucial. If the training, that is done at the college, is too narrowed down to specific job skills, one may find them selves in trouble later in life. It is only safe to consider ones future job expectations, and will be essential in our quickly growing nation.

People need their education to be flexible enough to fit a bunch of different jobs in order to be secure. Secure from the competitive job market and it's awful pressures.
