MIT's Sloan School hosted a "sports analytics" conference at which an academic paper analyzing bias in officiating was presented, among other things. See here. The amount of coding to come up with a proper data set must have been mind-numbingly dull after a while, but still, who knew the science of social science could be so much fun in its application? Sports fans, this one's worth a click or two.
