Beets!

This article is talking about how a California judge ordered for the removal of genetical manipulated sugar beets. This is because these genetically changed beets are considered bad for the enviorment and can effect other plants around them. However, the counter argument is that without these beets there will be a large jump in imported sugar and a large increase in sugar prices. They stated that there would be a "preliminary injunction against planting the seed will take effect on Dec. 6" (of this year). I am actually really happy that these beets were taken out of the ground for I view that this is a small step in govermental officals becoming more sensitive towards the enviorment. However, it does make my skin crawl a little knowing that the prices are going to have to go up on sugar, but I personally think that it is worth it for we each need to make some sacrifices to make our future better. So what do you guys think? Do you agree with the removal of these beets? Or do you think that they should have been kept? Or whatever other imput that you guys may have.

I think that while the removal of these beets was probably a good idea, genetically manipulated (or modified, what ever you want to call them) crops definitely have some positive potential. As water resources become more and more scarce and there are more mouths to feed, a new look these types of crops (and more research) will be needed. For now though, we probably shouldn't be using an "unperfected product". We'll just have to live with an increase in sugar prices.

I agree with Jeff that genetically modified products will become more important as time goes on. However, I think it is great that the beets were removed. We can not better our environment by just sitting back and not changing anything about the way things happen. Risks need to be taken and I think this is a great way to start. Hopefully, others will follow this example.

Like the previous two posters, I also think that the removal of the beets is a good decision. It is, however, sad that the genetically modified beets made it so far through the system, since genetically modified organisms, especially those that are made for consumption, go through extensive research, countless regulations, and many agencies. Even at the cellular level, there are tons of red tape surrounding genetically modified organisms. Now, it will take a lifetime for another genetically modified beet that does not harm the environment to be made, since it will have to go through the regulations etc. once again.

I don't really mind the price being raised on sugar or for that matter beets. I don't really care for them.
