Getting the gang back together (sort of)

The San Francisco Giants and its fans are happy to know that many of its players will be returning to the franchise excluding some players such as Eugenio Velez and most shocking, Juan Uribe who was traded to Los Angeles Dodgers. Fans are relieved that familiar faces such as Cody Ross, Freddy Sanchez, Buster Posey, Andres Torres, and all of its starting pitchers are coming back. The Giants have also resigned Aubrey Huff and Pat Burrell but they signed Huff for only 2 years and Burrell for only a year with mediocre pay. In addition, the Giants have acquired a new shortstop, Miguel Tejada, who was traded from the San Diego Padres and new prospects from the Arizona Fall league. Personally, I think the pickup of Tejada was not a great choice and it's horrible how one of the Giants' power hitters have gone to its rival. What do you guys think? Was picking up Tejada the right move for the giants as shortstop? Was Derek Jeter a better candidate at the time? Is resigning Huff and Burrell for 1-2 years even worth it?

Okay first I wanted to say FIRSTIES on commenting haha, but anyway I personally do think that acquiring Miguel Tejada was a good pick up. This is because as you said we did lose a big power hitter but also we just gained one in Tejada also it could be a stategy to hinder the Padres from having another strong year with also their loss of Adrian Gonzalaz. I also want to say that I highly doubted that Jeter was never going to leavd the Yankies, and yea duh Jeter would have been better then Tejada but I don't think he was worth what he was asking for. PLus I do think that it is a gamble about what we did with Burrell and Huff. However, I am glad that we did get them becasue they are awsome plus we could always call up one of our prospects like we did with Posey and Bumgarner which turned out well last year. So all in all I think that Sabien made the right off-season choices for the most part, but I would have liked to have seen Werth or Crawfordon the Giants so yea. GO GIANTS!!!

I have to agree with Chris on this one. Miguel Tejada was a decent pick-up and I honestly doubt any team other than the Yankees had a chance at getting Jeter. Plus, isn't he getting a little old? The loss of Uribe was definitely a blow but I think the Giants can recover. They have a lot of young talent and are definitely the favorites to take the NL West this upcoming season. The tough part is trying to mimic the magic that was this past season. We definitely have a HUGE target on our backs this year as compared to last year so only time can tell if Sabean pulled the right strings in terms of acquiring personnel in the off season.

I personally do not know much about Tejada and his background, but after reading the two prior comments, it seems like Sabien made a pretty good decision. And like Chris said, it can be helpful in preventing the Padres from having another strong season. In my opinion, although acquiring Jeter was probably a long shot, I'm really glad we didn't because I don't know about you guys, but I love the team's "castoffs and misfits" image and Jeter would've definitely ruined that. And although Huff and especially Burrell weren't the superstars of the WS, I'm glad we resigned them. Hopefully next season can turn out great like the most recent, but I also hope that the team will maintain that "underrated" aspect of its character for years to come.

I definitely think that Huff should have be resigned not only because he is a talented player, but because he brings something to the clubhouse that not everyone has. This is also the same reason why I keep advocating (to my dad, as if it matters) for Sandoval to stay, because he bring a vitality and energy to the clubhouse. I think that the fielding talents of the payers not only is worth their resigning, but I also think that the synergy of the clubhouse had a HUGE part to do with their success in the WS. I think Burrell is a tossup in terms of his performance, and even Huff is a little risky. Huff is getting slightly old. In any case, I'm glad they got resigned, and we'll see how this next season turns out. BY THE WAY, please read the Outlook's article on the bandwagon Giants fans: the ones that pretend to be fans because they're doing well. UGH. I'm SO GLAD that the story was run, and kudos to the staff for running it!

Oh, I also have to say that while Uribe is a terrible sad loss, I don't think he can pull what he pulled this season in the next. He, too, is getting old, and I believe his last big push was with the Giants. If I were Sabien, I wouldn't have made the deal he wanted, either. We need to invest in some younger guys, and not just a big bat that may or may not be great. This happened with Zito. We signed a power arm for a HUGE amount and got beans. My fear, and probably Sabien's fear, is that that situation could happen again. This, to me, shows a great deal of growth in Sabien, who's making more conservative choices that are tending to work out for us more so than before.

As much as I love Huff (and I really do love the man A LOT), signing him to a 2 year $22 million contract doesn't make much financial sense at all. We're going to have another Posey/Molina situation/platoon on our hands with Brandon Belt setting the minor leagues on fire.

As someone who had slashlines mirroring Posey's in his last minor league season (.352/.620/1.075), Belt, a first-baseman currently on the AAA Fresno roster, is definitely going to split time with Huff at first base. (Un)fortunately, both Huff's and Belt's left-handed bats are too valuable to lose from the lineup, and one of them will inevitably have to play one of the corner outfield positions. Considering that we already have six relatively decent outfielders in our lineup (i.e., Ross, Torres, Burrell, Rowand, DeRosa, and Schierholtz), this contract is only going to complicate matters for the Giants throughout the next two seasons. (Unless Huff or Belt learn how to play Shortstop well during this offseason)

Regardless, GO GIANTS!!!!!
