Rick Perry Is Out, Backing Newt Gingrich

Governor Rick Perry has recently suspended his campaign for the GOP presidential nominee. His decision is no surprise in light of the dwindling support he has garnered over the past months. Based on recent polls, Perry was projected to have around 6% of South Carolina's votes, behind Romney, Gingrich, Santorum, and Paul. Although Perry will no longer make an impact on the GOP nomination, he had his fair share of noteworthy moments and controversies while his campaign was still active. In remembrance of the Texas governor, here are some of
Rick Perry's most memorable moments.

Although Perry will no longer make as much of an impact on the GOP nomination as he did or would have as a candidate, I do feel it is worthy of note that he endorsed Newt Gingrich today. After Rick Santorum was officially confirmed as the Iowa caucus winner and recent South Carolina polls show Gingrich close behind Romney (30%-37%), South Carolina might turn out to be a tough grab for the GOP frontrunner. Anyone except Romney winning on Saturday could mean an extension of a competitive GOP race, whereas a Romney victory might mark the end of the road for at least one of the four remaining candidates. This move by Perry was terrible timing for Romney and will not only spice things up for Saturday but will also, in a grander perspective, indeed hold an impact on the GOP nomination.
Though I am sad that Perry's campaign has ended, I am not surprised at all. For a man who has supposedly never lost an election, his heart did not seem to be in the race. He made blunders like sounding drunk during debates, not remembering his own plan to cut the Department of Energy, and his poor performance in the debates. To me, it didn't really seem like he wanted to be president in the first place. Concerning his endorsement of Gingrich, I agree with Jeremy. For Romney, this is very bad timing. I know that Rick Perry never was very high up in the polls, but still, add his supporters to Gingrich's and the race is going to get even closer. It may not spell disaster for Romney, but it sure as heck will say be careful.
While Perry's run was...colorful at best, his bowing out speech did mark one of the highest points of his campaign. He said--with surprising poignancy, considering his track record--"With a loving wife, a loving family and a loving God who is in my life, things are going to be good whatever we do." So it's safe to say that Perry has made the right decision and stopped pursuing a job he is fundamentally and inherently incapable of fulfilling, noting his past speech blunders. While assuredly not the main impetus behind his downfall, I do believe that Perry struck much of the same twang that Bush did in his day, which is not exactly the most reassuring aura following the former Texan's administration. As both Jeremy and Patrick stated, Perry's endorsement of Gingrich will indeed impact the remainder of the GOP nomination process. We have yet to gauge how ready the evangelicals will be to vote for the Mormon Romney.
