Hillary Clinton announces that she will leave job at end of term

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced at a town hall forum with State Department employees that she will leave her job at the end of President Obama's current term, regardless of whether he wins re-election or not. She described her decision as stepping off "the high wire of American politics" after 20 years.

She stated that she plans to work as hard as she possibly can until the last minute.

Her announcement was a response to a question at the forum, which was held to mark the anniversary of the Department's "Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review" which Clinton considers to be one of her major accomplishments while Secretary of State. She has said that she had planned on only serving one term in her current position.

However, it has been noted that she is one of the most popular politicians there is a lot of speculations regarding her plans.

I think that this may have some effect on Obama's campaign when the time comes. Clinton is a popular figure around the world, and unless he announces a new replacement with similar acclaim, he may be looked at negatively.

What are your thoughts AP Gov folks?

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has probably had a stressful four years and is itching for a little time to catch her breath. I understand her need to resign after having such a title. As for her future plans, maybe will see her running again in 2016?

Hillary Clinton political career has been very impressive. After all, she was the first women to run for office, hold a cabinet position, and first women senator to represent New York. In addition, she has gained 4 years of experience in foreign policy and has presided over the more successful aspects of Obama administration. This shows that she could potentially become a great presidential candidate for the 2016 elections. If she ever desired to run for president she has a strong resume. However, it seems that Hillary plans do not include running for president, but rather instead to continue her work toward women and children rights.

As for the rumors that Hillary could replace Biden for vice president seems null since she has made it clear that there is “below zero chance”.

I do not think that this will be the last we hear about Hillary Clinton in politics. Past secretaries of state, like Condoleeza Rice, have demonstrated that they often return. Even in the Obama administration, ex secretary of state, Colin Powel, was called for advice.

I think that it is reasonable for her to step down. She has been in the national political spotlight for 20 years with being first lady, senator and secretary of state. She has done alot for this country during her time as secretary of state with the Middle East being a major hotspot. She was a good secretary of state.

Finally Hilary Clinton will stop abusing the power given to her. It’s great that she will leave her position although I think she should have done so after Wikileaks exposed that she had ordered US officials to spy on UN diplomats. Hilary should have taken Wikileaks editor Julian Assange’s advice and resigned when she violated UN laws regarding espionage on fellow members. To me it seems unacceptable that she could get away with what she’s done and is just another reason the US is unpopular around the World.

I have to disagree. I think she has done a wonderful job as Secretary of State, given the demanding nature of her position. I think she has been an incredible role model for women and has demonstrated great strength and diplomatic skills all around the world.

While I am not sure we will see her on the Democratic ticket in 2016, I agree with Katherine that I doubt this will be the last we will see of her.

I agree with Mitchell. I watched a news report which also speculated that Hillary Clinton is just taking a break before returning and maybe running for president. I think that she has been so involved in our nation's affairs for so long, that it would be strange if she didn't make one last bid for the presidency.
