iPad 2 Scam

In Vancouver, up to ten fake iPads have been sold in Best Buy and in Future Shop stores. Investigations are beginning, but as of now, it is believed that the robbers bought the original iPads, replaced the iPads with carefully measured clay amounts, resealed the packaging, and returned the fake products to the stores to be in turn sold to other customers. Spokesman for Future Shop Elliott Chun expresses the seriousness with which Future Shop approaches this matter, as it diminishes the company's integrity and reputation.
Why do you think people have chosen to resort to such measures to gain some money? Does the economy have anything to do with it?

I think this is just a case of natural materialism/ petty theivery. People are always finding ways to con businesses and other people out of easy money. A lot of the world's economies are in trouble. Maybe, as a result, many people are in fear that their own country's economy may fail as well. Which, would lead to this ridiculous scam.

Some people are just desperate for money, and in this economy, it is becoming harder and harder for some people to make a living because of the competition for jobs. Currently, iPads are being sold starting at $500 dollars at the Apple store (list price). Prices vary in other stores. Some are cheaper, and some are more expensive. $500 in food is enough to support a family of 6 for about two weeks. So if these people who are responsible for replacing real iPads with "dummies" return 10 iPads, they have enough money to buy enough food for 6 for about five month. With this in mind (maybe), some people give into the temptation to scam others for profit.

The workers in the stores should have bothered to open up the returned ipahd-2 boxes and checked. It would have been immediately apparent that the ipads were absent. While the scam was obviously unethical, I think that the stores in question should admit that they were somewhat at fault for the success of this scam.
