Obama's New Chief of Staff

Today, a many members of the White House Chief of Staff change, President Obama chose William Daley as his new chief of staff to replace Pete Rouse, who temporarily advised Obama for a few months after Rahm Emanuel resigned. Daley is an experienced businessman and politician; he has connections with Wall Street and was part of President Clinton’s staff during midterm elections, when a similar Republican Congress landslide occurred and the government became even more divided. Daley and his brother (the mayor of Chicago) supported Obama during his 2008 presidential campaign, despite his connections to the Clintons.

His appointment is controversial because he is not seen as “liberal;” he has many ties with big banks and businesses (and with Wall Street, like I mentioned before). As most people would say, it looks like Obama opted for a more moderate person who could help him win the favor of some conservatives, especially with the 2012 elections coming up next year.

I personally don’t know very much about William Daley, but I hope he and Obama are able to work well together and lead the nation onto a better track, especially because the chief of staff is such an important position in the White House. Hopefully the new members of Obama’s staff will help him out, especially with his staggeringly low approval ratings.
