"A Diamond in the Rough:" Finding a Lost Voice

We’ve all seen them – homeless people standing on the side of the road, holding a cardboard sign with some plea for help written on it. But Ted Williams, a homeless man in Ohio, would rather speak to people than hold a sign. His cardboard reads “I have a God-given gift of voice.”

And someone finally listened to him. Doral Chenoweth III of “Columbus Dispatch” recorded William’s story – his former life as a DJ all the way through how he ended up on the street. Chenoweth put the video on YouTube, and it became an immediate hit.

Now, Williams has job offers from WNCI’s Dave & Jimmy morning show and CBS’s The Early Show. He’s already told his story on the radio. In addition, the director of post-productions at NFL Films plans to offer Williams a job as a voiceover artist.

Williams was right about himself – he has a God-given voice, one that “makes you feel obligated to do or say something monumental, just to warrant his narration.” Chenoweth certainly found a gem; and all he had to do was stop and actually listen to the type of person that tend to ignore.

With so much sadness and anxiety in today’s news, it’s nice to hear a heartwarming story once in a while. Starting a new life, doing exactly what he’s always wanted to do, Williams is now “happiness personified.” Everyone deserves something, don’t you think?

I think that it's great to see the "light at the end of the tunnel" in today's news. It was unfortunate to turn on the news and on January 1st and they said "Happy 2011! In our news today...two murders in Oakland...bullet grazes woman's ear..." It is nice, I agree with Jessia that the news these days are definitely important but downer and it's nice to see a happy story once in a while!

I agree with Alex. It is great to hear something positive going on in the news rather than people getting killed or robbed. At the same time the publicity heled the guy and it was really just a chance that helped the guy and gave him a job. Also, this shows that looks may be deceiving and he may have looked like trash but his voice was golden. Everyone has a gift or talent, they just have to find it.

I remember seeing this video on Youtube and I was really surprised as to how the homeless man's voice sounded like. After hearing his one of a kind radio voice, I definitely think that he deserves to be back on the air. Regardless of Williams' past affiliation with drugs, he should be given a second chance and people would love to hear his golden voice again. I would hate to see his talent go to waste and I agree with Trevor that everyone does have their own special gift, and it's time for the Ted Williams voice to be heard again.
