Pop Culture being the focus...wait, where did the Real News Go?

Ok…whatever happened to the cute, innocent, youthful girl we once knew as Lindsay Lohan?!?! Drugs…parties…alcohol…rehab…DUIs…arrests! I mean, what is up with her?!? US Weekly news has recently started posting news about her trying to get someone to cough up $10,000 to do a photo shoot with her post-jail time.  How low can you go? Her days as an A list star have been deteriorating ever since…forever! I mean, accept for Parent Trap, she’s been falling and failing to be a good example.  Which brings up my biggest complaint! If she’s so trashy, why does the news and media keep posting about her?  There are starving people in Africa, a threatening genocide in Darfur, a continuing war in Iraq (though we say we’re supposedly done…which we aren’t) and yet the HOT news is Lindsay Lohan and her new escapades in jail.  It’s sick how media is so focused on such small things as stars like her.  Just like on the world news tidbit on US news that only lasts for about a minute, “And now the news around the world in 60 seconds,” what the heck?!?! People need to  get their priorities straight about something.  Politics, economic and social issues are much more prevalent than the latest gossip on Lohan…media, you suck!

I find that pop culture gives people meaning in their life when they have little substance in their reality to hold on to. It's a fun escape that helps us all sit and pretend. Is it important? To some. It's better than telling our civilians that our leader created the world and can control the weather. (North Korea)

Oh, and as for Lindsay Lohan, no press is bad press. If she gets tons of attention for doing drugs and being scandalous, she's going to do drugs and be scandalous.

I watched this today on E! News about her asking for $10,000 for a photo shoot of her in rehab!! I think it's pathetic. I also think that the media should focus on successful celebrities and their accomplishments (aside from their careers) throughout the years while maintaining their careers as actors and actresses. We should focus on people like Angelina Jolie who has been a UN ambassador for the U.S. and has traveled to various countries throughout the world, taking notice and action of the things going on in those countries affected by diseases and poverty. Also, why don't we focus on young adults such as Selena Gomez who has recently become a UNICEF ambassador to support the organization's mission to help reduce the number of deaths of children in countries in the African continent. And one last example, Emma Watson, the young and bright British actress who has joined forces with People Tree and its founder Safia Minner to create eco-friendly clothing items.
All I'm saying is that we should focus on those who are shining and working to build a better future for this world, and we should turn our heads away from those who are acting like morons and not contributing anything worthwile or interesting for society.

Well, the media give people what they want. People tend to be more entertained by trivial sensationalist stories like those about Lindsay Lohan than by the depressing events around the world and the accounts of what is right with the world. Doesn't make it right, but what can you do about it?

I agree that the media is terrible with their coverage, but let us look at it from the view of the media. What is more interesting: Lindsay Lohan or an (ex-)war that has lasted many years? Lohan > Iraq war

It is just like how the media was obsessed with the fact that I slept with Tiger Woods. Sorry, couldn't help it.

The Media has been focusing on celebrities as far as we can remember- but I never remember them doing it so much. I am sick of all the negative celebrity news, at least have some positive. On the other hand, people may not know where to go for real news, news now a days don't seem to have most of their facts right. But whenever they do, it's some over the top company that doesn't even produce the news correctly. As for me, whenever I want to see AROUND the world news, I turn to BBCA- they cover everything from wars, starvation, economies around the world, and what else Facebook and Twitter, so there is that celebrity connection every now and then.

I agree with Bobby, in that people find meaning in meaningless things. There are some who grasp onto pop culture like it is the only thing worth paying attention to, like it is the only thing that they understand and find interesting.
On September 14, 2020, a 15-year old boy in Indiana committed suicide after he was exposed to constant ridicule for being gay. How many people have heard about this? How many people care about this more than Lindsay Lohan? I want to know why our generation lacks substance and why we no longer care about the important things in life. I want to know why watching someone else destroy their own life with drugs and bad publicity is so much more enticing than the suicide rate among homosexual teenagers. I want to know why we are so shallow and judgmental towards people that we do not even know. We are a horribly embarrassing generation.
