Gay Prom Date Approved at Georgia High School

An 18-year-old senior at Bleckley County High School has won approval to bring a same-sex date to the school prom.

Derrick Martin says he first sought permission in January to bring his date to the April 17 dance at the school. Bleckley County High requires approval in advance for bringing a prom date from outside the county.

Principal Michelle Masters says there's no school policy covering the subject of same-sex dates.
County schools superintendent Charlotte Pipkin says the board discussed the matter but did not take a vote.

Both Masters and Pipkin say the prom will go on as scheduled. A request by a female student in Mississippi to bring a same-sex prom date led to the prom at her school being called off.

I'm really glad that Constance (the girl who wanted to take her same-sex date to prom), stood up to the ignorant policies at her school. If I were in that position, I would probably choose not to attend such an event where they have such bias rules. What are even the cons of the same sex to attend prom together? Why do school officials look so down upon homosexuality? I just think it's ridiculous how gay people are stereotyped these days... it makes me quite sad..

I guess the Mississippi school district is still living in the stone age. They probably feel that it would cause a commotion if Constance were to take her girlfriend to prom. I think it's wrong of the school district to be so prejudice of something so harmless. Glad the Bleckley County High didn't violate Martin's freedom of expression, unlike the school district in Mississippi.
