Where we've been is just as important as our conversations?

The article linked in the title of this post refers to a a new law proposed by a coalition of major tech companies. It addresses privacy law by attempting to clearly define the line of information law enforcement is allowed to have by mandating a search warrant for electronic data. This law will completely destroy the Patriot Act and I'm curious to see how law enforcement will stand upon this issue. The strongest defense against this law is that law enforcements agencies get a lot of information by tracking a phone call on the spot, or tapping into a company's GPS system to locate a phone. If a search warrant is needed, it will delay retrieving that evidence, maybe even lose it forever as data is erased as soon as it gets too old. I support it, however, in principle because of how it deals with a newer age. Laws need to update just as frequently as technology in order to efficiently be a law. With that said, data in the cloud needs to be protected and now we have a proposed law to do just that. It's a step in a direction and let's hope it's the right one.
