Western Chinese province struck by 6.9 earthquake

The USGS reported on their website that a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck an area in southern Qinghai, near Tibet, on Wednesday morning and was followed by two quakes in the same region. There were no immediate reports of casualties in the remote rural area, but witnesses have described houses quickly crumbled. Ten minutes following the first earthquake, the area was hit by a magnitude 5.3 quake, and a 5.2 two minutes later. The death toll is now at 67 (updated at 8:23pm PST via @BreakingNews)

Another earthquake... pretty scary. It's a good thing that the death toll is not as high, mainly because not many people live in that region. Hopefully the death toll doesn't keep rising and damage is minimal. Seems like 2010 is truly the year of earthquakes.

Edit 04/14/10: Death toll has risen to 589 and over 10,000 are injured.

Earthquakes in 2010... when is the next one going to happen in California? Every earthquake that goes on in another region of the earth only makes me more uneasy. We're due for another major earthquake here in California, and I honestly don't think that we're ready for one. I read in a news headline in the SF Chronicle today that the water pipes system in the San Francisco area were aging and slowly showing signs of wear- an earthquake would eliminate any emergency water supplies. Though they are inbound in repairing those pipes, I still do not believe the SF Bay Area to be ready for a major earthquake.

Yeah, its lucky that this part of China wasn't very populated. An earthquake of that magnatude is very powerful and could have cause a lot of damage in a urban area (such as SF). I agree with Preston that another big earthquake should be coming soon. I think we should all be prepared for it. My mom works for the county so we have like some food stored and water just incase of a natural disaster. As dumb as that might sound, its a pretty good idea. The bay area has had a few earthquakes in its day.

I remember hearing about a possible earthquake in California too! I agree that we should try our best to prepare for it. However, its hard to prepare for something we have no control over. Nor do we have any idea when it'll exactly occur. I agree with Preston, the Bay Area definitely isn't ready for an earthquake.

yeaa there have been so many earthquakes recently! Over spring break there was, I think it was 6.2 magnitude, an earthquake that was centered in Baja, California. There was not too much damage but that just goes to show that there can be an earthquake at any time and we have to prepared.
Speaking of earthquakes..when we do earthquake drills it is actually better to duck and cover NEXT to a desk, NOT under it. if the ceiling falls, it will land on the desks and basically crush anyone under it. It is better to duck and cover yourself beside the desk because when the ceiling falls..the ceiling over the desk will create a space that can protect someone from being crushed...if that made any sense.

hopefully the province in china is able to recover quickly from the earthquake...everyone should take precaution

I remember an article years back saying that earthquakes are unpredictable; that they can happen anytime. Yet, recent patterns of powerful earthquakes must be an indicator of something else stirring underground.

Talia - What you describe is called the "triangle of life". Technically, one can stand next to any tall, solid object, not just the desk. The height of the object acts as support holding up the roof that falls creating a small gap that the individual can survive for the duration of the quake. The only major problem with this theory is that nobody will know where these triangles will necessarily form. Remember that the formation of the triangles completely depend on how and where the roof collapses.

I'm assuming you're talking about the 8.4 earthquake that is/was supposed to hit LA. The USGS said it was just a hoax.

Uh oh.... I'm gettin very scared! Earth quakes seem really terrifying... and hearing of earthquakes taht kill over one five hundred people is just crazy. I do not want there to be an earthquake anymore anywhere. What if i lose friends, families, and acquaitances during a massive earthquake. They should develop some anit-earthquake technology. Seriously
