Should marijuana be a choice, like eating oreos? It's a prevalent issue in California, and, in all honesty, Aragon is definitely no exception. I think it's interesting how some people are so dead-set against marijuana, and others really couldn't care less if they or their friends smoke. Opine away.

In terms of society I'm not too fond of the idea. It would expose kids to the idea much sooner. I think we should try to put off corrupting the innocent as much as possible and I think Holden Caulfied would agree.
However in terms of the economy it's been argued to be a good thing because the government could tax it, etc.

I guess a quick restatement of previous arguments in address to a couple comments up above.
Jessica mentioned that if marijuana is legal, suddenly the world would reek of it. Yet, alcohol is legal, yet I don't smell alcohol around the house..(/relief) Just because something is legal does not mean every one will use it.
Also, kids are already exposed to it. Welcome to high school. Word gets around rather quickly. It's up to the student to decide whether or not to use it. I guess it can be a good training session in preparation for college, when the parents won't be there to help them out anymore.
And for the economics part, I don't remember the exact numbers, so I guess you can refer to the older threads for the links and stats there.

Depends on your neighborhood, or where you live. Some of them are more afflicted with alcohol abuse than others.

But alcohol, nicotine, and THC are all technically drugs.
Relating to the smelling topic, Smoking cigarettes are legal and they don't cause the world to reek. Or at least you don't smell them constantly.
Although legalizing marijuana would probably have an impact on being influenced to kids earlier, in my opinion.
Kids are introduced to drinking at a young age because of their parents. Most people I know can tell a story of being 5 or so and trying beer and thinking it was gross. Perhaps weed would have the same impact? and if so then some kids would resist it because of personal experience? just a thought
Marijuana is a horrible drug though it may be used alot..imagine if it was legal! It would be everyone and the smell is so horrible..our world like that is disgusting! I thik it should stay unlegalized and we can keep it away from the young and put more signals that it ishorrible. They are young, and guliable it will work. The abovetheinfluence is a great way to show but c'mon more ideas need to come about. Just like Jessica said lets not corrupt the enviornment.
Now wait a second, it's utterly absurd to think that legalizing a smoking substance of any kind would make the world smell bad or that it would make the enviornment any worse then it is now. I am a person who utterly despises drugs of all kinda but don't hate them for those reasons, they're not the right ones.
The legilization might cause an increase of use but what should be the concern is the increased THC percentage, we have no idea of why chemicals effect us the way they do and that should be the scary part. Our knowledge about the human mind is so small that we need to know so much more before we can just legalize something that could potentionally be dangerous down the road.

I think that marijuana should be legalized because i dont think that it would really create such an unbearable smell. There are lots of smokers, but the world doesn't smell bad cause of it, but usually factory things.
I also think that marijuana isn't very dangerous. Alcohol is legal, and i believe alcohol can be dangerous.
Since our economy is pretty bad, i think it would be good for us. It is just up to everyone to choose whether or not to be exposed to it. When people grow older, they should become responsible enough to make their own decisions.
Hey, sorry for posting another marijuana thing, i didn't realize so many others came before it. But I think some really good points came up that I hadn't thought about before.
Smell: we probably won't wake up to the fresh smell of pot every morning, even if it is legal. Same deal as cigarettes in my opinion: the whole world won't be smoking.
I agree with Colin that marijuana isn't very dangerous (when used responsibly), and Jeffrey's point about increased THC is REALLY interesting. I never considered that before. I'm sure that with legalization companies and advertisement would pop up, and pretty soon people would begin experimenting with ways to make their brand of marijuana more potent. And that could cause real problems: some kind of easily-available super-pot is sort of scary sounding. Never though of that before.
There isn't smoke all over the place because of laws banning it in lots of places. Do you guys know those back-lighted no smoking signs on airplanes? They used to turn off. People used to smoke everywhere back in the day. Anyway, I personally think that if marijuana were to be legalized, there should be a significant amount of money, (from the tax revenue, of course) allocated to ads portraying weed and cigarettes in an extremely negative light. Like basically because of those ads (and also because my dad smokes) I will never ever smoke a cigarette. Eww.

Okay. For the people who think it would make the world a worse place, stop and think of Amsterdam. Marijuana is legal there, and they haven't exactly imploded from it.
Marijuana should stay illegal. It's too dangerous and even though it hasn't caused any deaths, it can be very harmful. It's bad for our health and our lungs. Also, marijuana can lead many teenagers taking risky actions that they would not normally do.
Even if legalizing marijuana is good for the economy, think about all the car accidents we would have. Some people drink and drive and if we legalize marijuana some people will be smoking and driving.
People already do smoke and drive, legal or not. Not saying legalization wouldn't increase the amount of stoned drivers, but it wouldn't be a new thing.
What about legalizing it at a certain age? It seems to me that no one is proposing that other drugs, like alcohol and cigarettes, be accessible to all people. If teenagers/kids could legally have marijuana, what about alcohol? However, if we make a certain age at which smoking becomes legal, we might run into the problem of how enticing a forbidden fruit can be. Still, it seems to me that pot should be legalized for those who can legally have access to other drugs. Does that mean the drinking/smoking age in question should be lowered? Maybe. I don't know.

People already break the age limit for alcohol and tobacco almost routinely, what makes the age limit for pot any different?
