Amazon Just Sparked A Race To Bring Robots To Our Doors

Amazon's patent application
Amazon recently applied for a patent to create a robot that could deliver items to front doors or even inside houses, as the patent describes the robot having the ability to open garage and front doors. Other companies, including Robby Technologies, Thyssenkrupp Elevator, and Starship Technologies, have also tried to create delivery robots. With so many companies moving to put these robots on the streets, it probably won’t be long until most of our purchases are being delivered by robots instead of people.

I think robot delivery is much more efficient than our current system. I could even see it speeding up deliveries. I’m not certain how these robots work, but I don’t think they need to stop at several locations before reaching your house and instead, bring your package directly. Additionally, they’re made to be safe; many prototypes that travel on sidewalks stop when pedestrians are in their paths and have a microphone for communication. While these robots will be replacing many delivery people’s jobs, I don’t think it will have a big impact on the job market overall. New jobs will open up, as people still need to create these robots and give specific packages to robots to deliver.

How will this impact the job market? What are your opinions on robots taking over people’s jobs?

I think having delivery robots are a great idea in terms of speed. Our deliveries will probably be much faster. However, will this mean that the delivery fee will be more expensive? Also, what does this mean in terms of jobs? We desperately need jobs in this country and I think having robots taking over the delivery jobs from everyone else could be really bad for the overall economy and unemployment rate. I think there are prons and cons for both sides.

I think the new delivery robots will be an interesting addition to our world. Increased speed of in delivery would be great, but I'm sure there will be tons of problems that will arise once they are put on the streets. The people that will be needed to iron out these problems as well as any other behind the scenes work for delivery companies will create more jobs. Hopefully new jobs due to changing technology as well as the jobs that Amazon has already created will balance out the jobs lost.

I think there are many benefits and issues regarding delivery robots. One of the major benefits is efficiency. With these robots, delivery would likely be a lot faster. However, the major concern regarding these robots is jobs. While it may create jobs to produce and test the robots, it also takes away jobs related to delivery. Also, while some may think it evens out, it is important to remember the education needed for each job. It is an interesting concept as technology has evolved and should be put to use for our benefit. I am conflicted regarding this topic as I see strong arguments for both sides.

I think that this method of delivery is a good idea as robots would definitely speed up the delivery process, although the image of fairly large capsule robots moving along the streets is a bit weird to imagine, for me. I'm not too concerned about the loss of jobs, as it sounds like a lot of people will still be needed to monitor the robots' movements and deliveries. However, the fact that the robots may have the capability to open doors and garage doors is slightly alarming and I think would take some time getting used to.

Yes I do believe that robots will be more efficient time wise, but I think there are more negatives than positives. If I saw a robot rolling down my street I would be freaked out. Even though it is 2018, I don't think we've reached the point of robots interacting with humans casually on the street. I also believe it is a huge safety concern if robots are entering your home, whether the owner is there or not, because it is an invasion of our privacy. Finally, it will take the jobs of many individuals in the delivery industry so overall I do not think this is a good idea.

I think eventually robots or advanced technology will take up many of the manual labor jobs humans do today. It's kind of a scary thing to think about because unemployment rates will go down since employers wouldn't have to pay robots. We've seen glimpses of self driving cars; many people in America have jobs that have to drive or transport something via vehicle, so if self driving cars do make the roads thousands upon thousands of jobs will be lost.

I believe that technology will continue to advance and therefore we must come to terms with robots taking over certain jobs in the future. Although, more jobs will open up as these robots will require people to monitor them and people to build and improve them. I would definitely like to see if these robots could become more efficient than humans, and how popular they will become in the next few years.

Delivery robots may help improve convenience, but I believe that will entail the loss of delivery jobs. I agree with Julia that our country needs more jobs made- not more taken away. Such advancements in technology worries me that roles that are filled by humans could be completely replaced in the near future. I believe there is also an area of concern regarding dysfunctions. What if those robots were to crash into something and the package were to be lost. I do not believe the cost is worth the benefit of efficiency.

Having delivery robots would be a lot more efficient, but at the same time many jobs would be lost as a result of this. But as technology advances, having robots or other machines taking over manual labor seems almost inevitable. Additionally, robots seem to cost a lot to build and maintenance. To some extent having robots roaming around delivering goods seems a bit concerning because what if the robot malfunctions or the robot enters the wrong house.

The use of robots is becoming more prevalent in society today as technology is continuing to advance. I don't think robots will become commonplace so soon, but we are continuing to shift towards a lifestyle that is more dependent on technology, so it's inevitable that there will continue to be more advancements. I don't think this is a cause for concern over unemployment just yet since the idea is still fairly new, but eventually it will effect what employment looks like in the future. Delivery jobs may be cut down as a result, but the technology sector I believe will grow and open up more new and different opportunities for employment and growth, which in many aspects is positive as we are continuing to be reliant on technology.
