Male birthcontrol?!

"The pill", which was released 50 years ago, allowed women to take control of their bodies in a whole new way. There is all kinds of methods to prevented unwanted pregnancies from everything to the patch to the pill and even taking a shot. This forces women to alter their bodies chemistry and risk potentially dangerous side effects... but what about men?

Scientists from around the world have been working on methods for male birth control. Even though a male pregnancy prevention pill is still around 5 to 10 years away from being on the market, the results are promising. There is also talk of a "spray on condom" which has been in testing since 2007.

In birth control for women, hormones are used to make the brain think that the women is pregnant and turns off egg production. Although, since males do not get their period this would be much more difficult to do. The pill for males uses a combination of testosterone and progestin and shuts down signals from the brain to the testes.

I believe that a birth control method for males is due. Although, it seams like the side effects for males because of the birth control could potentially be much more dangerous and harmful. Also, since the pill has been around for so long, it is probably developed enough to work properly and have little side effects... even though that varies person to person. I also believe that it is the woman's responsibility to take care of their bodies and prevent any unwanted pregnancies and if woman really care about that then they should not put the responsibility on anyone else... since the man isn't the one who would have the baby.

Another interesting fact is that most women would definitely trust their partners to take the pill.

So, what do you think? How successful could the male contraceptive be? And potentially how harmful could be it for the male body? Should males even have the pressure put on them to take birth control?

This is a very interesting idea. I hadn't thought of males taking pills. I guess its a good idea, but it will have to depend on the side effects. I'm pretty sure men will not want to suffer weird side effects for women not to get pregnant. I can see men thinking women should take the pill because its their body. I think maybe a better way is improving the women's pill in order to create less side effects.

I agree with Derek that it is a good idea for males to possibly have their own form of birth control. But I also agree that it is the responsibility of the woman to make sure if they don't want to become pregnant than they should protect themselves as well. But I do think a male form of birth control should be tried to see if the effects are less risky than woman's birth control.

I think more people would get unintentionally pregnant because I feel like guys are more likely to say that they took their pill just so their partner will let them have sex, because its not their 9 months or the pain of giving birth if they do or don't take the pill. That being said, I don't think the male birth control pill will really do much and I completely agree with Noelle that women should be careful and still make sure they take their pill or some other measure of preventing pregnancy.

Wow a contraceptive for men? hmm thats strange. I don't think that this would be highly effective for men just because they are not the ones who are going to get pregnant for 9 months so what exactly would be the purpose for them. I doubt any guy would want to have side effects from a pill so what makes you think they want to take a pill. And anyways how would that even work?

Well I think that they're on the right track as far as contraceptives go, but I don't think a pill is the right thing to use. I definitely think this is a good thing because it sort of designates responsibility to both parties.

I have to agree with Yuzo and Noelle on the idea that there won't really be a way to police whether or not the males do take their pill.

I think that this is kind of interesting. I thought the spray on condom was kind of weird and i would not use it. It just doesn't seem to me like that would work. i thing that the male birth control is not so safe. i personally would not take it. i also think that some guys would say that they are on the pill too, even if they are not. i would not say that though.

hm I remember reading something about spermicide a while ago and it had a pretty low efficiency.

One the other hand, I've read that some scientists are proposing to use ultrasound to stop sperm production. And the best part: it lasts 6 months.

In my opinion, male birth controls are defintely something that should be tried out. The current birth control pill alters that anatomy and chemicals in the female body, so why is it a bigger risk for guys? I get that its ultimately a women's job to prevent pregnancy, but if a couple really cares enough, they should both put in effort to prevent pregnancy. A health reason for why men should try other contraceptives is because some women have serious reactions to the pill and often men dont want to use condoms so the women must continue to use the pill despite its harmful effects. Im not saying that guys have use the pill, but if they care enough, then they should atleast try.

in my opinion, i think theres nothing worng with guys trying the pill. THe current pill basically alters the the anatomy and chemicals in the female body, so why would it be any owrse for guys to take it? I feel like if people care enough about not getting pregnant, both enganged in the activity should put in effort; Since pregnancy and the baby effects not only the mother but also the father. A health reason for why male birth control pill should be made is that some women have severe reactions to the pill. All too often, the male does not want to use a condom so the women must continue using the pill despite its harmful effects. I just think if guys care enough, they should just atleast try it out.
