Follow-up on the Gulf coast oil spill

I read an article on CNN's website titled "Is oil spill 'Obama's Katrina'?" When I read this I got really upset. The article contained many quotes of people (mostly affected citizens in the area and republicans) claiming that this whole crisis was Obama's fault. They claimed he didn't act quickly enough and that he wasn't doing enough to help fix the problem. My question for you is who's fault is it when a large bureaucracy is involved and mainly the cause of the problem? Is their responsibility to fix the problem or the government's (Obama's) problem to fix it? Also, is it fair to compare this oil spill incident to Bush's Hurricane Katrina incident (are they comparable in how each president responded to the situation?)

I mean I think it just makes it even more apparent that whoever is in office will be blamed for issues that occur throughout the nation at the time, whether they had quite a bit, or little, to do with it. Of course Republicans are going to turn this into something to pin against Obama, just as Democrats used Katrina against Bush. That is the name of the game in politics, although it may not seem very fair. But hey, what's fair now a days anyway? I think people need to place the blame somewhere, and the easiest place to put it is on the big guy in charge.

Obama isn't a god, he can't stop these things from happening, weird how some people just can't see through that. What's even more sickening is the fact that people blame presidents and other high seating officials for all the bad things that happen to them. It's like people trying to blame Bush for letting 9/11 happen. He had nothing to do with it.
Anyway, there have been plenty of oil spills throughout the years, probably a few bigger than this one. They'll get over it as time goes by. The oil won't stay there forever.

I agree with Lizzy; it's inevitable that people would use this HUGE disaster for political ammunition. And really sad. Obama couldn't have realistically prevented the oilspill, and I think that since it was brought to his attention he has done a great job responding. According to an update on the Obama Administration's oil spill response in the past 24 hours (http://whitehouse.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/05/05/update-on-obama-administration-oil-spill-response/), there has been:

Successful Controlled Burn
NASA Satellite Assets
Aerial Dispersant Spray Missions
Seafood Inspection
Ocean Exploration Mission

I think he should be doing even more though, and allocating more federal funds. Globules of oil are already falling to the bottom of the sea, where they threaten the ocean food chain and coral reefs.

I'd have to agree with everyone else. Obama isn't responsible for oil spill on the coast. Unfortunately, because containing the 5,000 barrels of oil spilling out into the ocean every day is definitely difficult, I think people are pointing fingers at the most powerful man in the country. What I don't understand is why these people blaming people in the first place, and why Obama's critics aren't blaming those responsible for the drilling.
I think these people need to realize the issue at hand and the difficulty in finding a solution.
And I have to say Rush Limbaugh isn't the most reliable person around...

I agree with you all. Clearly this is just how politics is. They try and gain support for their own party by making their rivals look bad. And it works most of the time. ALthough this is a good strategy, it isn't fair to Obama. THey should not be speaking ill of him, unless he really does something wrong.

I agree, I do not think its Obama's fault that caused this spill. It also is not completely his responsibility. The cause of the problem is the company that spilled the oil, not obamas slow reaction to clean it up.
