hopped into science

My article is about how a new species of animal was found in the Foja mountains of Indonesia when herpetologist Paul Oliver spotted a frog sitting on a bag of rice inside at his scientific campsite. It turned out to be an unknown type of long-nosed frog that he dubbed Pinocchio. I think it's crazy that a brand new species of animal was found by accident and even more so inside of the camp site instead of on expedition.

It's really amazing that there are humans on every continent in the world and yet we are still discovering new species even today. And that frog is one of the silliest looking things I have ever seen.

This is crazy that a new species was found on a camp site, but to my understanding, there are millions of unknown reptiles, animals, and plants on this planet. These scientists were just very lucky that they could realize that this was an unknown type of frog.

Its always fun seeing these funny looking creatures that is never seen before. I am actually not that surprised that scientists are still finding all these new creatures, and i am quite sure that there are many other species of animals scattered all over the world, some of which we as humans may never find.

This is so awesome! I agree with Mei Mei. There are still millions of species unknown and waiting to be discovered by scientists today. These ones just so happen to come upon "Pinocchio" and they should be very proud of themselves. And they were on an expedition too. Such a coincidence.

That is really interesting actually. It is so fascinating that these species of frogs differ so drastically, yet it is such a small difference. Sometimes I wonder whether the odds are greater to rather stumble upon a new species than try to search for it passionately.

I think that is amazing.. To find a brand new species on accident. I wiould like to discover a new species on my own. We humans will never discover ever species of animal .

To find a new species of frog is a surprising discovery. However, I would not be the least surprised if they had found a new species of insects seeing as they are the most diverse organisms in the animal world.

Also, I'm not too surprised that they discovered a new species in a tropical zone such as Indonesia. Tropical places and rain forests house many unknown species waiting to be discovered.

I think it's great that there are still species that have yet to be discovered. It makes me feel less bad (...somewhat) about the extinct species and the endangered species that are nearing extinction.

I agree with most of the people that wrote the comments. It's so fascinating to know that there are millions of creatures out in this world that we haven't discovered yet. This is why I keep my mind open about creatures such as Loch Ness monster. Who knows what is out there? We should always keep in mind that these undiscovered creatures don't go endangered.

So for all you people who don't know what evolution is, it is when something about a certain species changes so it can better adapt to its changing conditions. So in essence, there will always be new species out there to discover... and current ones will always die out whether it's due to the Darwinism theory "survival of the fittest" or humans. I know some of you feel bad, but you should really consider about doing something rather then saying "it's okay if species go extinct because they will be new ones..." also yes, this discovery is amazing, but honestly I don't think it's that amazing. Sorry if that sounded too harsh, what I mean to say is that there are going to be a lot of new species that will be discovered in the next decade, it's not like this frog is an ancient species from the dinosaur age... that would make it truly amazing. But I do agree that it is incredible coincidence that the frog appeared at the camp site, some people get all the luck =p
