A Nuclear Iran

As if Obama did not have enough on his plate as it is, he may face a nuclear Iran in the near future. The country tested its first nuclear power plant this Wednesday, and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen told CNN that he believes Iran to have the materials to make nuclear weapons. The Institute for Science and International Security (of Washington) released a report stating that Iran has reached "nuclear weapons breakout capability." Tehran, however, vigorously denies any such thing.

President Obama has stated that he is willing to engage in negotiations, or just dialogue, with Iran. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is willing to comply. Former President George W Bush never participated in diplomatic relations of any kind with Ahmadinejad.

Now I don't know how accurate any of these claims are, since we were wrong about WMD in Iraq, but I know that a nuclear Iran would be detrimental to the already delicate situation in the Middle East, especially regarding Israel and Iraq. It is rumored that Tehran helped Saddam Hussein's son Qusay Hussein in 2002, fighting against the US. There are also rumored ties to Iraq's Shiite militant groups.

I don't think we should be so quick to tell the Iranian government what to do, but it is also not in our best interests to stand by and wait.

wow. that is super frightening but then again you think of bush's earlier assumptions..and you think..really? but we can never be too sure. im just glad that obama is being smart and willing to negotiate and verbally talk about the issues.

I think the decesion is a tough one. I think it is fully possible for Iran to be developing nuclear weapons and a nuclear war is, although frightening, also possible. I admire Obama for stepping foward and willing to negotiate with the Iranian president. Hopefully the negotiation will go well, we're counting on our president for it. If we tell the Iranian government what to do, they might feel intimiated and get angry...and we dont want to be on their bad side. But then again, if we do wait... we could be potentially standing by while they piece all their weapons together. The decesion is tough and either outcome could be dangerous.
