A Near Experience for our President

Last week, Saad Bedrie Hussein, an Ethiopian immigrant with a history of mental health problems, was caught for sending Obama a tainted letter containing nothing less than his own HIV positive . He stated that he was a huge fan of Obama's, and that he wrote the letter to obtain government support and tickets to Obama's inauguration.

The letter also contained an orange powder, now known to be a drink mix.

Rahm Emmanuel also was to recieve one such letter.

There is a criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court in Illinois stating that Hussein sent the letters with malicious intent... Is it truly hard to prove? The man did have a history of mental illness, but wow...

It's kind of reminiscent of Obama's victory, when he delivered his speech behind a glass shield. I mean, there are truly people out there who wish him nothing but harm, who would actually go so far as to physically injure or kill him. It's just crazy...

If he was trying to harm Obama, wouldn't he try some other way rather than send a letter? I'd say it's pretty widely known that if you send a letter to Obama, he isn't going to be the one reading it, and if he is, it will be thoroughly scanned for bombs, anthrax, etc. but then again, this guy apparently had a few screws loose, so maybe he thought it would work.

Again the person is mentally ill, or he is just trying to make a statement that he really resents Obama. Though we dont really see it much, there are people who still hate Obama. This won't be the last attempt we would probably see. I am sure every president at one point or another had to deal with issues like this. There is no one to make everyone equally happy in our system, only can listen to the majority. The minority can still cause problems.

I find this to be mentally funny, due to the fact he may try to just simply obtain some attention directed from Obama. After all he did say he was a fan, but anyhow I would say that this is a typical and minor issue that Obama would often encounter as president, since many people send numerous amount of absurd letters to the president for inane reasons.

well i read somewhere that Saad Hussein claims to have sent the letter because he looked up to Obama, although leaving blood on the letter is just a bit odd. His actions seem to point to the conclusion that he is indeed not mentally healthy, so I'm not really sure what will happen to him now.

Plus, dried HIV infected blood on a piece of paper + some odd juice-drink-powder doesn't even seem like a very effective way to go about trying to harm Obama.

I'm pretty sure you can't get infected with HIV from dried blood either, though that just makes the letter a little more creepy and puts more scrutiny on it. The poor man was obviously deranged at the time, so even if they did get him to court, he'd just plead insanity and be sent to a psych ward until they deemed him to be better. I think we're just putting so much stress on the fact that we really have to protect our new president that he's probably not going to get hurt by something like this.

I really think that threats to Obama have gotten out of hand. I mean, while there isn't any current threat that I know of (I doubt I would know if there was a threat anyway), every precaution is being taken. I totally understand that all of these security measures need to be taken, but I think it's really a shame. I mean, Obama has been chosen as the best America has to offer in these tough times. I think that any American who would try to assassinate him would have to be completely insane.

I mean, i think that kind of goes without saying, but back in the primaries I remember talking to a friend who said she wanted Hillary to win, just because she thought that if Obama won he'd get killed. We shouldn't be thinking like that, but I don't know how we can avoid it these days.

I doubt this Saad Hussein guy had some malicious alterior motive to sending this letter. I mean, this isn't the most effective way to harm the president considering that most mail from the American public goes through some form of security measures before it gets to the President if at all. Especially since Obama is our first African American president, the government is definitely taking some extra precautionary measures to ensure his safety.

I'm actually not surprised at all by this attempt at an "attack" on Obama. I actually think that it is just one of many more to come. The level of ignorance and discrimination that still occurs in this country and around the world suggest that though many of our modern laws have legalized the natural rights of all citizens regardless of race, the resentment and hatred felt toward other races is still prominent throughout the world. We live in California, in the Bay Area no less, and because we live in such a diverse part of the country, we are sheltered from much of the racial discrimination that occurs across our country. There is still resentment felt toward minorities and there is still resentment felt toward the white population for the pain and suffering of past generations. It is amazing that we have an African American President and I am beyond proud of our nation for electing such a capable man, but this victory in no one suggests that racism no longer exists in this country and around the world
