Oh, those crazy liberals puttin' Mac down again!

So, it seems that McCain has more than enough cars to transport himself and his family around, according to an article recently published in Newsweek. (Click on the title of this blog for a link.)

Obama supporters and McCain haters are definitely going to capitalize on this situation by portraying McCain as one of the elite of America, despite the all-encompassing appeal his campaign has tried to put on him. (No one can beat Nixon's.)

I'm going to shed my typical liberal views for this blog and give a neutral take on this development.

Cars are definitely nice to have, and I don't believe anyone can argue otherwise. When you have the money, you can buy all sorts of nice cars. Personally, if I had enough, I would search to no end for a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro in mint condition, despite its fuel economy. (Back in a time when leaded gasoline was still used.)

However, if this report is true, thirteen cars is a little bit much to have. There may be some other circumstances to this event, such as having multiple cars in different locations or having bought cars for family and friends. But it still shows that McCain has a lot of money, and that doesn't really help him in terms of connecting to the middle and lower classes.

I'm a bit skeptical on the report. I'm also very skeptical about Obama only owning a Ford Escape Hybrid. A typical middle class family has two or three cars at least, and I wouldn't start calling Obama middle class, despite his appeal.

I don't trust any news sources anymore.

I definitely agree that the number of cars that Obama and McCain own are probably skewed by the media. My guess would be that they are counting how many cars Obama personally owns himself - while the number of cars that McCain owns may include how many cars he and the rest of his family owns.

It seems that much of the media is pro-Obama, as a search in google news for either 'obama's cars' or 'mccain's cars' results in much the same results - all chiding McCain for owning so many cars. This may indicate that the 13-1 car count could be correct - as there are no McCain supporters trying to defend McCain under this claim.

While I must say that it probably is not a very good idea to try to appeal to all of America while owning so many houses and cars since most Americans see themselves as middle class citizens, the number of cars McCain owns is definitely a result of how many houses he has.

Cars.

Originally the framers wanted liberty for property ownership. Now, people complain about McCain's property.

So let me get this straight. We praise the wealthiest men in America at that time for protecting the right to own property we hold so dear. Now, we complain when someone actually uses that right. I say if the man earned it, he has every right to buy as much useless stuff as he wants.

We want so badly to believe that someone can be right in the middle of the middle class, when in reality all but one of us are richer or poorer than everybody else. So of course we can point the finger at McCain and say he has more cars than someone else. We can also say Jay Leno does, but we don't.

We should elect our officials for what they believe and what they will do. Leave their personal lives and personal posessions out of it.

You have also got to love the fact that Obama traded in his gas guzzling 300c with a V8 hemi in before the campaign for a more environmentally friendly hybrid. Honestly though, how do the cars that someone owns make them a good president? You can say that buying American shows that people support our economy but really ?
