"U.S. President-elect Barack Obama's administration will offer Israel a "nuclear umbrella" against the threat of a nuclear attack by Iran, a well-placed American source said earlier this week. The source, who is close to the new administration, said the U.S. will declare that an attack on Israel by Tehran would result in a devastating U.S. nuclear response against Iran. "
Yeah, that's great, basically, if (possibly when at this point) Iran gets nuclear weapons and blows up Israel, Obama intends to blow them up more. Honestly, like nuclear weapons are deterrants but you do not just so harshly say such a thing I mean, it just escalates the conflict.
However, "The current debate is taking place in light of the Military Intelligence assessment that Iran has passed beyond the point of no return, and has mastered the technology of uranium enrichment. " so yeah, this is not good. By the way, it is wildly believed that Israel has its own nukes. They won't affirm it but yeah, it is generally believed so US saying that it will nuke Iran does not do anything except make us more involved in this whole affair (and hated more by the Middle East) which is annoying given the fact that the US is trying to withdraw from the Middle East. This is not the smartest idea for Obama and it just goes to show, you can't stop a determined nation from developing nukes with just bribes and sanction

And then the whole world will end.
The end of a tragic tale.
Lets hope not...
But then again Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) has proved more or less effective in the past.
Anything having to do with nuclear weapons and the middle east makes me extremely nervous. The only sustainable way to resolve conflict is through the use of diplomatic tactics. Nuclear threats or "security" (referring to the nuclear umbrella) will not quell any tensions between Iran and Israel. That particular conflict is far too complex and persistent to be resolved by any other nation. I agree with Jesse in that the announcement of nuclear reinforcement on our part will only aggravate the already hostile conflict between Israel and Iran. At this point do we really need any more enemies. It just doesn't seem like a wise move on Obama's part especially considering the fact that he isn't even in office yet.
Well, in result of this conflict that we may be facing, this could turn out as a....NUCLEAR WAR.
Honestly the strugle for a more advance technology has eradicated our minds of peace and alternate methods in attaining a mutual benifit. But of course, not all people think that way nor want to end an international conflict without benifiting anything. But this is to show that Obama will defend the weak, despite that we could enter another whole new World War...with a daily missle flying over our heads now and then.
Well hopefully Iran isn't stupid enough to do something like nuke Israel because we'll blow them off the face off the earth. I think it would be a better idea though if we just give Israel some of our nukes to Israel if they don't already have them. We've already established the law of mutual destruction back during the cold war, so its pretty foolish to talk about ever using a nuclear weapon. Hopefully nothing like this ever happens and its just hypothetical. I also don't understand whats so wrong about stating we'll nuke Iran if they nuke Israel. It's just stating we'll give them what they deserve if that ever happened.
Seriously, if the Iranians decide to Nuke Israel, then they are more delusional than we previously thought. They are both soverign nations with nuclear capacity, so it is their responsibility not to use them. If Tehran decides to nuke Tel Aviv, I would suggest a broad attack encompassing all of the radical muslim world, because if such a thing would (god forbid) happen, then there would be no place for negiotionations, only retaliations. Imagine a world without fear of terrorist attacks, radical Islamists, or impending nuclear holocaust. This is the only way to stop it, short of outlawing religion worldwide, which is probabaly a better approach.
It is not only the Islamic Church that is condoning martyrdom, but until 1856 the Grand Inquistorial wing of the Vatican was still alive and well. The same wing that bacially commited genocide to the Arabs in spain existed, and continues to exist to this day, but under another name. In fact, the present pope was the chair of the Inquisitorial commitee, or whatever it is called now. In conclusion, no religon in the extreme is good, therefore it should not exist, and if we do not do anything soon to stop the crusades in the Middle East, then they will stop themselves with nuckes.
Are Iranians that stupid? I just think that they like to talk and threaten Israel. I don't think, at least I hope not, that they will attack Israel. They probably feel threatened by the presence of a strong Jewish state, and they want to seem tough themselves.
The idea of a nuclear umbrella is just dumb. Why is the Obama administration talking nuclear, when just a couple months ago, they were all about diplomacy? Is this because of Hillary? Seriously, I don't think that they should make statements like that, since it will probably enrage Iran. I think we need to look at both sides and come to a compromise that doesn't include banning religion or destroying radical Islamists, which will cause even more conflict. A lot of people don't understand that all Muslims aren't crazy terrorists. Real Muslims don't believe in suicide or murder. And if we did try attack extreme islamists, it would be hypocritical to let other extreme groups exist, like the KKK and other white christian racist groups.
That definitely would not be a good move on the part of Obama. Violence is not the answer. An action of violence answered with an answer of violence sets a bad example for the world. Because U.S is currently the superpower of the world, countries tend to look up to us. If Iran blows up Israel and we blow up Iran...it would cause madness all over the world. not good.
What scares me is the fact that Iran even has nukes. I think they are the first middle easten nation to have mastered the process of uranium enrichement, and considering the middle east's current opinion of us, that does not bode well for the US. who can say if the president of Iran decides that nuking us may be worth dying? And I honestly don't think he cares too much what the Iranian public thinks of him, but I haven't studied too much into it, either. And no, I don't think the nuclear umbrella was the best idea.
Sure, but the Americans got themselves into this mess from the very beginning. I mean, it is widly known that Israel most likely has nukes (and who do you think gave it to them?) and with the bad blood between Israel and basically the entire Middle East, you can't say that you would not expect at least one other country to also get weapons too.
It is also very hypocritical that the United States continues to pressure Iran into stopping their advancement into nuclear weaponry while they do not say anything about Israel. Even though they were not part of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, the United States should at least pressure Israel to finally officially confirm the fact that they have nuclear weapons while the continue their pressure on Iran.
Also, the idea of neighboring countries nuking each other should be seen as just absurd. The effects of the bombs would then be felt by both countries, thus screwing both countries over. Two countries that are huge offenders of this are India and Pakistan, and if they knew what was good for them, they would not ever try to nuke their neighboring country.
