Afghanistan Killings

Early Sunday morning an American Soldier was accused of killing 16 innocent civilians. According to preliminary reports, this soldier came up to houses in Southern Afghanistan and killed civilians in their own homes. This outraged the government and president of Afghanistan, who called this event unforgivable.
President Obama gave out his condolences to this tragic event, and NATO reassured the Afghanistan government that this man was acting on his own. What do you think should be done about this?

This U.S. soldier committed a war crime and therefore should be court marshaled and dismissed from the Army. The US Army officials should use this as an example to inform the rest of the army about intolerable acts.

I agree with Lexi that they committed a war crime and they should be punished. I believe they should be tried in Afghanistan by their court system and knowing they will probably get a harsh punishment they will deserve it.

This will greatly affect our relationship with the Afghan government and might jeopardize their cooperation with us. These intentional killings by US soldiers should stop and the murderer should be held accountable. Months ago, three elite soldiers urinated on dead Afghan bodies. Then, few weeks ago US troops burned the Qur'an, which the government claimed as accidental. These actions will fuel more anger among the Afghan communities and they may despise and question the presence of US troops there. I just hope that all our work in trying to achieve peace wont go into waste.

I agree with Jan that this is yet another demonstration of why Americans, not just American soldiers are viewed so negatively around the world. Our reputation for crudeness and ignorance stems from the actions of men like this soldier. Not only is the killing of 16 innocents a horrific crime (one that would be met with the death penalty in the United States), but this man has dishonored and overshadowed the soldiers that work hard to do good.
