Republicans respond

House Republicans have officially pledged to immediately review Obama's jobs bill proposed last night in his address to Congress. They stated that they "desire to work with [him] to find common ground." After an unproductive summer of disagreements, it seems it is time to try and compromise once more.
Why did the House Republicans reply so promptly? One reason may be that Obama proposed cutting government spending, a big goal of Republicans. Also, in his speech, he repeatedly called for tax cuts. Throughout his address, he kept emphasizing the fact that his ideals for the plans have been compromised and agreed upon by both parties in the past. Is he spinning the House and did it actually work? Since this was only a proposal, nothing is set in stone, so anything he says could just be a form of spin. Right?

Spin in this case would be awfully ironic, given what Obama mentioned in his speech about it being time to "stop the political circus," and get to work solving economic issues. I personally think that politics will always be a bit of a circus, but let's hope this prompt reply does signify something positive for the possibility of a working compromise rather than a further take on political spin.

Perhaps, it is in the best interest for House Republicans to act like they want to compromise. After the debt ceiling crisis, most people around the U.S. are upset with Congress in general. If any congressmen/women wants to be reelected, he/she certainly needs to shed the image of stubbornness and unwillingness to compromise.

I completely agree with Andrew. If the Republicans were to completely disregard the American Jobs Act, they would be called obstructionists. This, obviously, would be bad for the 2012 elections, thus their decisions to compromise are somewhat questionable. It is obvious that business owners and voters that are on the line are important for this upcoming election and if the Republicans were to show that they are just in Congress to shoot down any offers from Obama, then Obama would get a lot more ammunition to use against the Republicans. It would be amazing if the Republicans would meet in the middle with Obama to work something out, but the idea of a compliant conservative congressmen/women is something that we should be wary of as election season is coming.
