Obama For Gay Marriage

On Wednesday, President Obama became the first sitting president to back gay marriage. He claims to support same-sex couples in not only getting married, but in being together as a family and raising children. He explains that he is not the only one that feels this way. Family and friends also agree that something needs to be done to help these men and women feel equal to everyone else. He also feels for those serving our country.  Obama States, "When I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don't Ask Don't Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in marriage, at a certain point I've Just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married". Some college students in particular, do not agree with his plans for helping the economy and government spending but respect and agree with his above statement to allow gay marriage. Many people are speculating that this is a way for him to win more votes.  What do you think? Is this going to help him in running for president? How big of a risk was this?

It's definitely going to help him with the young voters, but will probably steer-away more uh "traditional" adults. However, I think everybody has already made the assumption that Obama supports gay marriage anyway so I doubt this is a huge revelation to anyone. It is interesting that he openly said he supports gay marriage due to the fact that he may lose votes. Hopefully he does believe that this issue is bigger than him becoming reelected. After the vice-president backed gay marriage earlier this week, what did Obama have to lose?

Obama has made a bold move, but I applaud him for his sincerity. Even though the announcement was made earlier than expected due to Vice President Joe Biden's backing of gay marriage, Obama nonetheless took the risk. While this may potentially impact the election come November, however, many gay rights advocates are already in his party or constituency, and many who do not support gay marriage already disagree with his political stance. Sadly, I believe this move has only polarized our two parties even more, widening the gap between the two sides of ideologues.

This is definitely going to help Obama with the LGBT community because now they finally have definite support direct from the president. Unfortunately, this could also hurt Obama as well. Many people still don't feel the same way and might choose to either vote differently this year or not vote at all. However, I do think that in this country it is important that Obama takes a stand for the LGBT community. Not only is he promoting equality and freedom for EVERY person in America, but I think that he is teaching many people a lesson about tolerance and accepting others. Therefore, I back Obama up on his decision because everyone should be equal.
