Gingrich Finally Admits Defeat

Even though we all saw this coming, Newt Gingrich has finally stated that he is ending his Presidential campaign. It seems like a long time coming but Gingrich did leave us with things to talk about during his campaign. We all definitely saw his ups and downs. The most recent news being that his campaign was in major debt.

With the end of his campaign, Gingrich has tepidly given his support to candidate Mitt Romney stating that, "I'm asked sometimes, Is Mitt Romney conservative? And my answer is simple: Compared to Barack Obama? This is not a choice between Mitt Romney and Ronald Reagan. This is a choice between Mitt Romney and the most radical leftist president in history." Gingrich has finally tipped his hat to Romney. Even though Gingrich is officially out of the race, I will miss the interesting conversations that he brought up. How about you guys? Will you miss his antics or are you glad he is finally gone?

on one hand I am happy he is gone and on the other I am sad because I feel that some of the best stuff to say against Mitt Romney came from Newt Gingrich. This man has made it possible for the Obama campaign to simply pick and chose video recordings of debates or random interviews with Gingrich to find "dirt" on Romney. Though in all seriousness, I am glad that he is gone. At that point he was in the race for no reason (although apparently he was getting something like $30,000 each day he stayed in the race) and it was just getting to be a question of when he would drop out instead of does he actually still have a chance. Also, it doesn't really sound like he is endorsing Mitt Romney. Why not just say Mitt Romney is a conservative? Instead, as Elizabeth quoted, he said compared to Obama Romney is conservative, but when compared to Reagan, he is not. That doesn't matter though since he isn't running against Reagan. Besides, it's not like Reagan is the hero of the Republican party or anything.

Well, Reagan is still respected by many Americans, and was probably one of the most popular Republican presidents in recent history. He kind of is a hero to some Republicans. Personally, I think that he was more actor then president and that his policies were generally bad. But his image left him popular.
Back on Gingrich, like Patrick, I'm glad he is gone, but I will miss the his antics that made the Republican party seem so disjointed.
I think the only reason he ran his campaign so long was to impress his constituents and build a strong conservative-Christian right image to impress the unfortunately large religious-right populations in some areas, prolonging his office and influence.
