Emissions Political Cartoon

This cartoon is about Obama’s recent emissions standards of 35 mpg. I thought it would be a good addition after the article posted on the new emissions standards a few days ago.

Very funny cartoon. I agree that it may be an unfair generalization of republican values, but on the other hand, those seem to be the actions republicans have taken over the past few years. I believe this is an important step for the US to take, and one that should have been taken long ago. Hopefully we can catch up to the rest of the world in terms of environmental friendliness at some point in the near future. It's a little embarrassing to see how far behind we have fallen.

I think that for one it is nice to see a political cartoon that endorces our president. Personally, I feel that it is a shame that up to this point in our lives we have been able to mock and degrade our presidents, and even worse that they usually deserve it. As much as this may skew the values of either party, I am happy that within my lifetime I have a president that I can be proud of.

This cartoon is kind of funny though it is generalized. The new emission standards are a good way to make the country go green, but on the other hand, how will it help the short term factor of people. This plan is great when looking at the long term purposes of it. But short term it might further hurt the economy. They need to focus on the bigger problem such as the economy rather than propose a plan like this rather early. Once the economy stablizes, it will then allow the US to focus on other aspects of the country.

I agree that we really have to get going with becoming a more "green" nation and I believe that starting with the auto industry is a great idea. We've tried to change cars for the better in various ways, which some have gotten over to the news, including research for alternatives to use of oil. Yet, I don't think the public has seen any huge sign of change and action. Because the president has set the new standards of 35mpg for cars, the public has learned of this more quickly and readily through the media. It shows we're going to get serious with environmental action, finally.

Raising emissions standards is a good idea and also such a mandate by the president is justifiable since the government gave the car companies so much money... Apart from that, how does the cartoon generalize Republican ideology other than the word "deregulation"? Is excessive greed on the Republican platform of 2008? And what does raising emissions standards have to do with the repetition of recessions? There have been recessions under the Democrats too (such as the one in the 1970s) By the way , cutting taxes is a bipartisan method to stimulate the economy/increase the spending power of the people. In 1964 Johnson administration (it was John F. Kennedy's plan, but he died before it was passed) reduced taxes to 20-30% across the board. This was the highest in history up to that point and much more than Bush's tax cuts
