Gunfire in San Francisco Injures Officer and Bystander

Link to Article

Summary:
On Wednesday, March 21st at 4:30 p.m., a police officer and five civilians were injured during exchanged gunfire in San Francisco’s Crocker-Amazon Excelsior neighborhoods. Young students and pedestrians hid behind cars to avoid about 20-25 bullets. One officer was injured was wounded in the leg and taken to San Francisco General Hospital. Police are still investigating.

Analysis:
With the recent event that happened at Stoneman Douglas High School as well as other places, the right to carry firearms has been a prevalent issue. To me, it seems unnecessary to have this much ease in obtaining one. An incident like this one in San Francisco is a clear example of the misuse of guns and perception that all of these incidents are not that serious, but this needs to change. In my opinion, changing the way our government handles gun control should be an immediate concern especially with the rise of gun-related events like this one.

Questions:
1. What do you think can be done about this issue?
2. Will gun control laws actually prevent criminals from obtaining guns or breaking laws?
3. Do you believe that gun control laws deny individuals’ right to safety?

Obviously, gun law reformation has been highly controversial as of late, and I think that this can be a big factor in decreasing the misuse of guns. It definitely won't eliminate gun misuse completely, because if there's a will, there's a way and people will try obtain guns illegally. I think that there are other weapons that people could utilize for safety reasons and obtain legally. So gun control laws do not deny individuals' a right to safety because there are other ways to defend yourself.

I feel like in this case, the issue may not necessarily have been regarding gun laws, but instead the easy access to guns. Even if the shooters in this event obtained their guns illegally, they still obtained guns, and to me, the best way to decrease accessibility to guns would be by making guns illegal. There are still bound to be a number of people that find and get guns, but the problem will still decrease with higher enforcement. I don't see how gun control could possibly deny the right to safety, seeing that guns make any situation less safe, no matter what. Even though this topic is extremely controversial now, I don't think it should be, since the obvious solution would be to have stricter enforcement of gun usage and possession.

Well I think the number of incidents regarding guns has increase dramatically over the last few years. The main reason being the fact that it is very easy to obtain a gun license. I agree with Sid because I don't believe the issue revolves around gun laws, it's simply the process of obtaining a gun. There are many places where you can get a gun without having a license and that makes the situation a lot more problematic. Regarding gun control laws, I don't think it will help because there are so many guns out there already and it doesn't make sense to implement more severe gun control. In my opinion, I believe that gun control laws do jeopardize the safety of individuals. In some areas, I feel that I would be more safe if I owned a gun. Having possession of a firearm will keep one safer than say for example a knife.

I counter the above points in that, the process in which someone obtains a gun is in fact gun law. Gun law is not just the right to bear arms, the how the user gets the arms, and where they are allowed to carry and use them. The ease to access guns comes directly from gun laws. It is the laws, maybe not the right to bear arms, but rather the specifics in when it should be allowed, that need to be changed. And as for the "right to safety," this is ridiculous. Gun don't make people safe. Guns add to the danger.

I believe that this incident -- in addition to various other instances regarding gun injuries and deaths -- stems from both easy access to guns as well as the types of guns that are available for purchase. Although it’s definitely possible that some people will be able to obtain guns illegally if stricter gun laws were passed, I find the conclusion that no gun laws should be passed at all rather ridiculous and illogical. Stricter gun regulations would, at the very least, deter such incidents such as this. Lastly, as others have stated, gun control laws do not deny an individual’s right to safety -- if anything, these laws enforce safety.
