Joe Biden Cries on National TV

Did you see that winking action? That closing piece with Sargent Corey would make a robot cry, even a politician. John Boehner has a reputation of being a crier. Well then, I guess it is now officially OK for American men to cry when they are emotional. This is a good thing. Was it a good speech? I'm looking forward to seeing your thoughts after the student bloggers get some threads going in the coming days.

Yes, that closing piece was moving. And I would also agree that it is quite good that public male figures can shed tears publicly; it is quite silly that one would be judged for that nowadays.

I'm hoping it's okay to share some of my opinions on the State of the Union speech since there's been no other posts on it since Tuesday.

I find that it can become a political event more than a policy event at times. Since we just finished the chapter on Judicial Branch, I was curious about what role the Supreme Court plays in all this. So I looked up a few articles. It seems that various Supreme Court justices skip the State of the Union address. Justice Scalia has skipped the Address for almost two decades. It seems it's uncomfortable for more conservative justices since Obama's address is often very partisan. The Justices apparently are not supposed to clap, jeer, or show any emotion/reaction to the address. It seems weird that they must sit there basically neutrally for the full extent of the speech. While I understand why they are supposed to maintain neutrality, especially in the public eye, I can't blame the justices who feel uncomfortable and prefer to sit out the address.

Unrelated here's a fun link about some quirky aspects of the SOTU.

It's about time guys start crying! Do you know how many conflicts could be avoided if people stopped trying to act so tough all the time? Admit you need help. Admit it bothers you. ADMIT YOU FEEL SOMETHING. Gosh, my main issue with politicians these days is they only seem to give a darn and show some passion when they're accused of an affair. Maybe I'd give a hoot what you're talking about if I thought you did...
