The Cuts, The Cliff and the Ceiling

President Obama speaking on the Sequester
Last Tuesday, President Obama released his views on the automatic budget cuts that are destined to occur March 1st as a result of Congress' inability to compromise. "F.B.I. agents [will be] furloughed, criminals released, flights delayed, teachers and police officers laid off and parents [will be] frantic to find a place for children locked out of day care centers," reports the New York Times. The fact that these effects will take place as long no contrary legislation is passed is not in question, but some are disputing how quickly these adverse effects will be upon us.

While the Department of Defense is already planning to send 800,000 civilian workers notice that they may be the victims of  furloughs, it is believed that day care centers won't feel such effects until much later. Other services like the Border Patrol or FBI are also not predicted to be hit immediately.

Despite the fact that the US in dangerously close to experiencing this fate, the trend in Washington DC politics is that nothing will get done unless there are grave consequences to unite politicians. And these cutbacks may be just the consequence Congress needs to avert our course from impending doom. Already having failed plans to avoid the fiscal cliff and to raise the debt ceiling, do you think Congress will formulate a plan to avert this crisis? Do you think Obama is correct in his predictions concerning the effects of the budget cuts?

Congress knows that they have this impending doom hanging above their heads so I think the question is when, not if, they will pass something to combat our debt problems. Hopefully, our legislators can get their act together soon, or else we will all pay the price for their inability to compromise. I think they will pass something to manage our debt, whether it be more taxes, spending cuts, or a mix of both. I also think Obama's predictions can and will come to pass if a solution is not conceived in time.

Congress has shown time and time again that they like to cut things close. With the fiscal cliff and even the debt ceiling, it isn't until immense pressure has mounted, that they actually decide to take serious action in a situation. If a decision isn't reached, I believe that adverse effects along the lines of Obama's predictions will most definitely come true. However, I'm sure the Congress will come to some lukewarm "consensus" of sorts to avoid such a serious fate which will be reflected in elections eventually.
