Meteor Explosion Over Chelyabinsk
Earlier today, a meteor crashed near the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. The meteor first exploded in the sky which caused damage to the surrounds due to the powerful shock wave that the explosion released and flying fragments of the meteor. The meteor broke into several large pieces, but luckily, they did not fall in populated areas. More info on the initial details, reactions, and damage can be read here.
Here is a video containing several clips of the explosion.
Also, this article was linked in the first link I mentioned up above. It talks about how Vladimir Zhirinovsky (Russian parliament member) claims that the meteor explosion was actually a US weapons test. I just thought it was kind of funny how it shows that every country has radicals with some crazy opinions.
Just kidding. I mentioned it because it has a picture of sauerkraut being thrown at him.
Well, politically this event could negatively affect the US-Russia relations if they are seriously accusing us of sending missiles over there. However, I doubt the US would randomly conduct a missile test on Russian soil. Regardless, the meteor was quite powerful. It is one of the largest calculated. And for those who want a general overview of meteors, look at this article.
The Deputy PM of Russia has called for there to be a method to prevent such incidents from happening again, noting that the US and Russia were still incapable of preventing similar meteor crashes. Ironically and hilariously, experts in Vienna were discussing an early asteroid warning system. I'm sure this will give them plenty to talk about.
Overall, I am sure this is just a meteor crash not connected at all with the US. And Zhirinovsky is not a reasonable figure in my book and he definitely seem s to have some weird ideas. Unless Russia finds a missile with the American flag on it, they should stop accusing the US even if they do not like us.
