Another School Shooting Raises More Questions in the Gun Control Debate

Officers at Taft Union High School in California after a shooting occurred earlier today.
Another school shooting happened today at a high school in Taft, California. A student came to school with a shotgun and "shot one student before shooting at and missing another." A teacher also suffered minor injuries and the student was taken to a hospital and is said to be in a stable condition. Fortunately, the shooter was convinced to give up the gun before anyone else was hurt.

While this case may offer support to the NRA's wishes of having an armed guard at every school, a source reveals that Taft Union High School DID in fact have an armed security guard. Unfortunately the guard was unable to make it to school, yet it brings up the point that even having an armed security guard may not stop gun violence in schools. Nor do "all mass shootings take place at schools, raising the question of whether the country should have armed officials at every mall, movie theater and house of worship as well."

At the same time, today Vice President Biden met with the NRA to discuss gun control policy. However, the NRA shows little willingness to compromise, saying that "meeting at the White House was more about demonizing the Second Amendment than about keeping students safe."

Will NRA's stubbornness affect Biden's plans? How much influence do they really have? According to Rachel Maddow, they don't have much, but what do you think? Also, will we ever be able to prevent mass shootings in schools or other public places?

All the recent shootings makes me question the efficiency of our current gun control laws. Obviously something needs to be done. However, I don't think stationing an armed security guard at every school, mall, movie theater, and house of worship will change much, other than constantly remind the public of the fact that a shooting could occur. It will increase the amount of fear in the population. A shooting can happen with or without an armed security guard. I would like to hope that in the future, our country can find a way to prevent mass shootings in these public places, but this can only happen if the NRA will be more lenient. It's always depressing to read the news and see a shooting as the main headline. Hopefully, at some point the government will devise a method to prevent these events from occurring.

I don't think the NRA has much influence over what will happen. I agree with Savanna that having an armed security guard at public places will change much. Those security guards can't always tell if a person is carrying a gun with intentions to harm others. Though they may give some citizens a sense of safety and be present if something does occur, the guards won't be able to prevent the shooting before it starts. I don't think anything can ever prevent mass shootings anywhere. There are just too many guns in the hands of civilians, some legal and some illegal, and there are too many cases of untreated mentally insane people who could cause harm to others.
