Police in Belarus Capital Arrest More Than 100 Protesters- Tehjal Kumar

More than 100 protesters who gathered to the march on Saturday to call for the impeachment of a country's oppressive president were detained by the police in the capital of Belarus.

The event in Minsk showed that political supporters of the opposition tried to rekindle the massive demonstrations which struck Belarus last year but slept during the winter. More than 200 protesters were arrested on Thursday during the first massive anti-government demonstrations in 2021.

In August, demonstrations came after a contentious referendum, which led to the sixth term of President Alexander Lukashenko. Opposition and independent media have been heavily repressed after 26 years in power by Lukashenko, who has been described as the last tyrant for Europe.

More than 33,000 protesters were arrested and hundreds were beaten by the police during the riots.

This relates to economics because the government may need to start putting money in places where people may actually benefit to win them over.

Questions to consider:

  1. Do you think the protesters' reason for protesting was justifiable?

  2. Was it justified that more than 200 protesters were arrested during this planned event?

The protests in Belarus have been violently stopped by the police force, yet it seems that many protesters are still fed up without any acknowledgment of the cause they are fighting for. Many are calling President Alexander Lukashenko Europe's "Last Dictator" as he has managed to secure a sixth term in office. With upwards of 200,000 protestors, this public demonstration is the biggest protest seen in this time, and over 33,000 have been reported as arrested. Including those arrested were five journalists, four of which were later released. It seems like these protests will only continue with persistence if no change of leadership is made, and it will be a compelling story to follow in the future of the country.

I do think the protestors reason for protesting was justifiable because they want change and more freedom/rights. The best way to have their voices heard and to have their wants/needs acknowledged is to make the government and president hear them. They need to get their attention for change to happen. I do not think that 200 protestors being arrested was justified because of the protest was a good response from the government. If anything it probably would create more riots and outbursts from the people of Belarus because it will only make them angrier. The people protesting want change to happen and I think the only way for everyone to be happy would be to have a change in leadership like Rosella mentioned. If a change in leadership happens, the people will feel heard, and it will only benefit the country and create more unity.

I believe that the protesters' reason for protesting was justifiable since they called for the impeachment of an oppressive president. This president has been described as A tyrant and a dictator. so the fact that people were protesting against him is totally justifiable. And another act of police brutality is shown after these protesters were beaten and arrested during these protests, is not justifiable. This was a planned event,so there was obviously some sort of regulation implemented into it. There was no need to beat these protesters for wanting freedom.
