The Return of Dr. Anthony Fauci

We are now in the midst of President Biden’s second full day as head of state. We are also beginning to see more and more of some of the undoing of Trump’s previous actions, one of which is President Biden’s recent effort to re-establish Fauci’s role. It was only last October when former President Trump called Dr. Anthony Fauci a “disaster.” However, yesterday, Dr. Anthony Fauci was present at the daily White House briefing. This raises the question: is Dr. Fauci really back for good? Last year, we saw Dr. Fauci publicly disputed President Trump’s words regarding the pandemic. After which, according to an article from NPR, “Trump implied he was considering removing the doctor from his coronavirus task force.” After this, the country saw much less of Dr. Fauci at the White House briefings. However, Dr. Fauci is now back and calls it a “liberating feeling.” At Thursday’s briefing, free from the grips of the Trump administration, Dr. Fauci also revealed that he had deemed it necessary to contradict the President because his words were “uncomfortable [as] they were not based on scientific fact.” According to The New York Times, the significance of Fauci’s words at this briefing lie in the fact that he spoke “without the possibility that Mr. Trump or his aides would undercut him, challenge him or try to silence him.” Now, the country turns towards President Biden and officials like Dr. Fauci on their actions regarding lessening the impact Covid-19.

  1. What do you think about Dr. Fauci once again becoming the public representation of the White House for the pandemic?

  2. Do you think having Dr. Fauci back at daily briefings will be beneficial?

I think Dr. Fauci is pretty well qualified to continue as the public representation for the pandemic in the white house as he has consistently been trying to enforce masks and social distancing regulations. I believe that one of the reasons why Fauci wasn't able to do as much during the Trump administration was because Trump was spreading misinformation while trying to make the situation seem more under control than it actually was. I think having Dr. Fauci back at daily briefings will be beneficial because he seems to know what he is doing in terms of trying to limit the deadliness of the pandemic. Thank you for sharing!

As consistently emphasized by President Biden throughout his campaign, a focus on “listening to the science” and “ensuring public health decisions are informed by public health professionals,” are currently at the forefront of his agenda and plans in addressing the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s quite relieving to recognize that Dr. Fauci has begun to feel more comfortable in presenting the facts of the U.S.’ battle against the disease as they are, without sugarcoating or holding back information for fear of certain consequences. I also believe Dr. Fauci’s presence at daily briefings will serve partially as a reminder of the Biden-Harris administration’s promise of “restoring trust and transparency in American government.” As stated in The New York Times piece below, messages distributed by our nation’s leaders in addressing Covid-19, regarding mask usage and vaccines, have often not only been a bit “confusing,” but also dangerously “misleading.” Hopefully, President Biden, Dr. Fauci and their teams will develop a more direct, coherent response to political aspects that have interfered with Americans’ trust of scientific information delivered by the government, particularly throughout this pandemic.
